This month for the December Downtempo/Chillout Album of the month, we dig into the classics bin and pull out another missed gem. Ulrich Schnauss's first album release from 2001. Read On for the full review.
December 2003's Downtempo/Chillout Album of the Month
German Producer/Remixer/Artist/Genius; Ulrich Schnauss and his 2001 release called “Far Away Trains Passing By” released on City Centre Offices. This was Ulrich Schnauss’s debut album and it was missed by some people, because he was an unknown back in 2001. Since Nick Warren included “Nobody’s Home” on his Global Underground 024 disc, many people have gone out and bought Ulrich Schnauss’s albums. Yes, Nobody’s Home is included on this album and look for an upcoming interview with Ulrich Schnauss on this I:Vibes.
Ulrich Schnauss is in his mid 20’s and hails from Germany. He is Germany’s answer to Tom “Jedi” Middleton because he is just that talented. “Far Away Trains Passing By” is 6 tracks and it showed to many back in 2001 that Schnauss was a talent to watch for and someone who showed bright promise.
Ulrich Schnauss has a bright simplicity to his tracks, they don’t sound too worked over or not enough. He just seems to add the right amount of production and effects. The first track is a wonderfully simple Knuddlemaus, which my friends who come over to my house to chat, love to hear this song for some reason. It just builds on a simple melody and it’s great if you have a surround sound system to listen to this. The song just allows you to drift away. Knuddlemaus is a wonderfully simple song with just enough effects to enjoy. Next up is my personal favorite on this CD, “Between Us and Them”. It’s the driving downtempo song of the cd, just picks up and gets going and the melody is addictive. After a few minutes, the main part of the song kicks in and shows what creative people with ideas can do with downtempo. Passing By is track 3 and it is another song that just allows you to float listening to it. At this point about 3 tracks in, I wonder how does he do it?, how does it create these aural soundscapes? (To be revealed in the upcoming Ulrich Schnauss Interview). Next up is “Blumenwiese Neben Autobahn” which translated means “field of flowers next to the main road” (Thanks for the help Jan!). I wonder if Ulrich Schnauss got his inspiration for this song from some garden near a road by his home. I can see someone lying in a garden looking up in the sky listening to this tune. I love to drift to the melody of this song and it’s great for those moments when you just want to lose yourself in the music. Track 5 is the one that got Ulrich Schnauss more exposure because Nick Warren put “Nobody’s Home” on CD1 of Global Underground 024. In this song, Schnauss builds around a main riff, which is amazing in it’s own right. The song picks up from there and gets going, no wonder Nick Warren liked it so much. Who knew that downtempo could be so much fun to listen to. The CD ends off with Molfsee, which is a place in Germany but the relation, in which the location to this song is uncertain. I find this song is more experimental compared to the other songs in this CD.
Conclusion:
I wish I had found this CD in 2001, when it was released not in April 2003. Then we had Ulrich Schnauss release his “A Strangely Isolated Place” in June of 2003. “Far Away Trains Passing By” feels like a mini LP but still is recommended for everyone’s CD or 12” collection. What is obvious with this CD is that Ulrich Schnauss was talented and would be on his way to achieving great things musically. Remember that he is only in his mid 20’s and still has a lot ahead of him.
