The latest ASOT release has reached our shores at last! The 11th release to make it onto Armin's flawless ASOT label is by Scarab and is called 'Vagabond'.
Scarab, whose real name is Jezper Soderlund is also responsible for recently producing the mindblowing 'Rock' under the Ozone alias. He also works under the alias of Airbase, and put together an awesome remix of Envio's 'Touched By The Sun' on ASOT 009. With results such as these laid out before you, expectations are high, and in this case, they are met! Each mix - the Original Mix, the Miika Kuisma Remix and the Christian Rusch Remix - on this fine record have their own unique qualities.
:: Scarab - Vagabond :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT 011
A1: Original Mix The Original has a good strong beat accompanied by a healthy backup of percussion and sfx. The bassline is very active and drives the track from start to finish. The first half of this mix serves as a progression towards the main melody and feel of the track. It uses several different instruments to play basic teaser versions of the main melody, from synths to a lovely echoey piano. When the breakdown finally comes about, you're given the full version of the wonderful melody which then plays out through uplifting synth carried along by the driving bass and solid kick. A wonderfully pleasant piece of uplifting trance indeed!
B1: Miika Kuisma Remix This remix by Miika Kuisma starts off rather differently - with a chilled out piano intro. A beat is soon dropped in, followed shortly by layers of percussion, bass - which is less prominent than in the Original (which is a little bit of a shame) and synths. The synths in this remix are especially good - they're very well produced and have a truly uplifting sound to them with no coarseness, oscillations or noticeable imperfections. The breakdown is short and sweet, consisting of the dreamiest synth playing the wonderful 'Vagabond' melody. This continues until the synths are dropped, followed by the bass and percussion until the track ends.
B2: Christian Rusch Remix This remix begins with a long intro section consisting of several sub parts. Its mostly ambient with some backing piano. There are breakbeat sections also plus a small section of 4/4 kicks. The dreamy piano and ambience continues until almost halfway through the track, where the 4/4 beat comes alive and this lovely remix begins to roll out nicely. It has a quicker feel to it, but at the same time retains the mellow trance sound that envelops you and floats you along easily with the music.
This latest offering from ASOT is three excellent versions of this brilliant new track, each with their own special niche in the trance genre. The only disappointment is the fact the colour on the sleeve this time is blue, which was the colour of ASOT 002! :-)
Conclusion:
Overall, three fine mixes of another corker on this seemingly unstoppable label. Scarab - Vagabond secures a place firmly in the hallowed ASOT grounds.
