No Love sounds like a new group, they sound new but when you realize that it is really Evil 9 under another alias then you realize that they are not new. So is this a typical Evil 9 production or is it a new alias with a new direction?
No Love sounds like a new group that has just come out with a release. This is partly true because No Love is a new alias but the people behind it are not new and infact well known. No Love is really Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy who are behind the Evil 9 alias, who also releases records on Marine Parade. Side A is the original mix and Side B is a Precision Cuts and Will Saul Mix.
Original Mix
The Original Mix concentrates on the bassline and builds around it. The Original Mix is a slow building breakbeat song, which uses the bassline to great effect. The vocal is a weird one because you hear Zahra’s vocals but it is sung almost in a freaky low key kind of way. I think the vocal is unique in the way that it is sung and in the way that it is used with this song. The vocal sounds like a horror film voice. Personally I would prefer a dub mix because the bassline is strong on it’s own but others would argue don’t fix what is not broken. The track has a great breakdown near the end, which I find great because I love tracks with breakdowns or things that just change the pace. Great tune, not quite something that you would expect from Evil 9 but then again it is under another name. You enjoy seeing things that are not normal and not what you would expect. I think they deserve an A+ for innovation because I’ve never heard anything like this.
Precision Cuts and Will Saul Mix
Precision Cuts are Tam Cooper, Joe Gray & Jem Haynes and they have released a few releases, mostly on Simple Records. Will Saul is also a producer and remixer who has also released on Simple Records. The four of them come together on this remix for Marine Parade. The bassline is still there but they change one element that I did not like about the original mix. They changed the vocal because it is not used as much in this mix and when the vocal is used, it is changed slightly, so you do not hear the vocals as much as the original mix. When you do hear the vocal in this song, you hear it changed like almost scratching the vocal. The vocal is jittered somehow and it sounds scratched and I like it more this way. If you have a vocal that you don’t like and you are remixing it, then change the vocal to where you almost don’t hear it. I find that it works better this way but as I said before, some of you will love the vocal. I find this mix, better than the original mix because they are using the vocal in a more unique way, you still have the bassline but beefed up in my opinion. Much appreciation to Precision Cuts and Will Saul for giving us something different on the B Side of this 12” and for doing something different with the vocal of the track. The tracks seems to be more addictive than the original mix, so head for the Precision Cuts and Will Saul mix.
Conclusion:
Evil 9 is one of my favorite groups but they go under a new alias and use one of the weirdest vocals that I have ever heard. The bassline is amazing on both tracks and it is top stuff for a breakbeat track. I am a big fan of basslines and especially good ones and this is no exception. I enjoyed everything about the original mix except the vocal but you can always find ways around it or you might even like the original mix and the vocal. I’d head for the Precision Cuts and Will Saul Mix because they take it and add a better take on the original mix. They give you a unique take on a bad vocal but do so much to the vocal that they are given that you just love the mix. Well worth the cash for your record collection or for your deejay sets. Another quality release from Adam Freeland’s Marine Parade Label.
