Clokx makes a return, this time with a brand new track - 'Overdrive'. This one comes in Original and Ron Van Den Beuken Remix flavours, both nicely pressed on to the RR Records label. With plays on ID&T and BBC Radio1 and also massive support from big names such as Armin Van Buuren, Marco V and Cor Fijneman, things seems very promising indeed!
Ron Van Den Beuken has been in the dance industry for almost seven years now and the fruits of his labour are really shining through! With top quality productions such as Timeless under his belt alongside remixes for artists such as G-Spott, CRW, 4 Strings and also not forgetting Coldplay with 'Clocks' (also under the Clokx alias), I'm always eager to hear his latest efforts. Obviously not wanting to disappoint, these two mixes of 'Overdrive' are delivered in Ron's very own unique and identifiable trance style.
:: Clokx - Overdrive :: RR :: RR018
A: Original Mix The original mix of 'Overdrive' is a quick starter - showing off a nice solid beat and percussion which is very quickly joined by a lively bassline. This bassline borrows heavily off of Clokx' first release - the remix of Coldplay's 'Clocks' - as it sounds very similar to the bassline used in that one. A short break soon follows and is used well to introduce a tough trancey synth which begins a warmup by repeating a 3 note hook. This synth hook is then developed into a gorgeous and powerful melody - one which will really lift peoples spirits and get them hyped up for sure. In the main breakdown, a new melody is introduced - a very idle, heavily reverberated sounding semi-coarse synth. Another nice touch is the inclusion of a piano playing quietly in the background - it also fills the small spaces created in the quieter sections of the track very well indeed. The real masterstroke, however, is after the breakdown - where all the melodies are joined together and play as one. The sound of the idle synth playing the main melody strongly backed up by that powerful and inspiring trancey synth is just excellent! There is another short break, after which the melodies cut out and the track steadily builds again from bass and beat back through the powerful synth build up. The piano mentioned earlier is the main feature in the final breakdown, which builds up wonderfully in order to allow one more full on section of all the melodies playing together. Spot on.
AA: Ron Van Den Beuken Remix This remix has very similar features to Ron's own remix of 'Timeless', in particular the big, big stabbing and sustained synths. The remix begins with a short, quiet and bassless tinny sounding section which soon jumps to life with a beat and nice Clokx-style bass once again. The stabbing synths begin making themselves heard but give way for the idyllic melody during the first breakdown, before coming back and drowing everything out in a sea of pure synth during the build up just before the tune drops back in. This track focuses mainly on the subtle melody that these big synths play - they're more towards the background of the track but even so they keep your attention simply because they sound so good and strong - almost menacing. There is another synth-fest breakdown before the final main section which leads you towards the end of the track.
Conclusion:
I was a fan of Clokx first release, a fan of 'Timeless' and I'm a fan of 'Overdrive' too! The Original is what you need for absolute big time hyped up trance, while Ron Van Den Beuken's Remix takes a more steady approach, relying more on the feeling the track creates. Clokx was no one-hit-wonder - 'Overdrive' is solid proof of that!
