DJ The Freak has masses of DJ'ing and production experience behind him - over 20 years behind the decks and nearing 7 years in the production world. With this he has created his latest work - 'Rising Angel' - which is to be released on 2Play Records in January. How well does this tough trancer stand up to the competition...?
DJ The Freak has had recent success with his latest work. 'Addictive' on Jinx UK, 'The Sound, The Melody' on the big Tidy-Two label and he also mixed his first double album - the stomping 'Resonate 2'. Not wanting to stop there, 'Rising Angel' has been created. The record holds two mixes - the Original Mix and a Club Mix. Both of which are two tough pieces of hard trance.

A: Original Mix It’s immediate from the start that this track is tough in nature as it instantly begins with a solid beat carried along by a rolling bassline which is full of intent. Synths are quick to join in with this fray and several slightly coarse synths repeat stabbing melodies in the background. The initial breakdown reveals the main melody - a very coarse synth playing a simple stabbing melody which has a very determined, urgent feel and really helps to drive the track forward. Repetitiveness is avoided by small but noticeably effective progressions in the bassline and overall melody. The main synth is accompanied by higher pitched backing synths, creating a welcome rise in the track - almost an uplifting feel. There is a final break in which the main stabbing melody is in the spotlight, after which a final main section leads the track to its close.
AA: Club Mix The Club Mix begins just as quickly as the original does, but this time it features housier sounding percussion and a more rounded bass. The bass sound itself is very interesting - it sounds chorused and has a pleasant main-synth sound on its edge which helps to carry the track along as well as it also providing the bass foundation. It also has a nice variation in note every now and again which adds to the 'house' style and sound while still remaining firmly in the hard/tech trance realm. The breakdown is again used to introduce the main stabbing melody that featured heavily in the original and it is used here as the centrepiece for this mix. A few minutes later, there is another break and the track resumes its steadily paced drive onwards without the main synth, towards the end.
Conclusion:
'Rising Angel' is a good, chunky piece of toughened hard trance. The two mixes provide a nice variation around a central theme of techy, ominous synths backed by a meaty beat and bass. Very nice indeed!
