Its time for an early Christmas present, because the latest release on the fabulous A State Of Trance record label has been graced upon us. St. John Vs. Locust - 'Mind Circles' is the twelfth installment on ASOT and it has its work cut out if it is to match up to ASOT's suberb release history...
The latest ASOT release is another of these 'artist vs. artist' tracks which definitely appears to be growing in popularity as of late. Mind you, I think that this allows for a lot more creativity and track variation to shine through - obviously two minds are better than one! St. John Vs. Locust have produced a track which sits firmly in the ASOT trance style mould. This is accompanied by a remix by Passiva on the flip.
:: St. John Vs. Locust - Mind Circles :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT 012
A: Original Mix The original has a drawn out minimal beginning section with a lonely yet sturdy beat and very basic percussion. A shrill ambient synth is added, as is a rather spooky synth instrument which makes a stab every 4 beats. A mini build up allows the bassline to enter and shortly afterwards the main synth makes an appearance with a repeating teaser of a melody. From this you can immediately tell what kind of track this is going to be - pure trance which isn't too hard or too bland. At this point, you really want to hear more, so you're granted with a breakdown. This breakdown is something special - it is one of those breakdowns which I could sit and listen to for an age. It begins with the quiet synth teaser of the melody which progresses into the full melody when some backing synth ambience and 'aahhs' are added. When it all seems too good, the deep bass is brought back in which brings it to a new level. There is a slight build up and then the track takes you away on its journey of mind cleansing trance. The melody is one of those which will lift you off the ground and carry you into the sky. It is played so wonderfully by a light yet strong synth and will have your eyes closed, your hands up and those neck hairs on end for sure. There is a short rest section before a synth driven break which takes you off again into the wonderful main section and ultimately, towards the end of the track. An utter dream to listen to!
B: Passiva Remix The Passiva Remix begins with a short and fairly quiet intro section - background ambience with a slow electric guitar solo. A hefty beat is quick to join in, as is some subtle bass tucked into the background. Soon after these developments, the full on bassline is introduced, accompanied by some standard percussion to round everything off. The whole first third of the track is one big gradual build up to the breakdown. More subtleties are added as the track progresses - a light layer of synth teasing the melody, the very 'Ibiza sunset' sounding electric guitar and a development in the bassline. The first half of the breakdown is very quiet, while the second half is used to bring in the synth driven melody. The melody is the same as the original, but is approached in a different way, making for good variation between mixes. The synth also has a much crisper feel and sounding, making it more punchy than flowing. The first main section demonstrates how this remix is more upbeat than the original - it relies on the beat and bass to drive it onwards rather than letting the melody carry things along. There is a 'breather' section where the main melody is removed and a soft, quiet synth plays a mellow filler melody. Another brilliant sounding synth and bass driven breakdown paves the way for the final main section which again, leads the track to the closing wind down section.
Conclusion:
'Mind Circles' is a totally great track - absolutely worthy of the grand ASOT label. The Original Mix is pure quality trance which will capture your mind while the Passiva Remix is a more upbeat, beat driven and lively affair. Excellent!
