Adam Freeland releases another single on vinyl from his debut album “Now and Them”. The first single was We Want Your Soul and now comes Supernatural Thing. Will live it to the first single in terms of quality?, Read on to find out.
Supernatural Thing is the next single to be released from Free*Land – Now and Them. The original song was really nothing special and I wonder why Adam Freeland chose this to be the next single, when their were much stronger singles, then again Adam Freeland tends to surprise people and see things in certain tracks that most of us do not. This is the first of a double vinyl release on Marine Parade
A1 – Adam and Evil Rokaus Mix B1 – Album Version B2 – Stereotype Mix
Adam and Evil Rokaus Mix is a darker affair compared to the original song. It is Adam Freeland and probably Evil 9 together but I am unsure. Anyway, this mix takes a much darker approach in terms of sounds and synths. Still has the funk and the 70’s feel of the original song but it is more Adam Freelandesque. I like the darker mix and I think it is a great direction to go because you add the original, a slower mix and a darker mix all on one vinyl. I enjoy it because it is a new take on the original mix and it goes on a darker journey, which should please the breakbeat massive. I get a sense that they were aiming for something a little different and I love it.
Album Version is nothing different from the CD version. I viewed this as one of the more average tracks on an above average album. It has this 1970’s feel on the song and a sort of funky approach put together. I’m not sure what type of deejays would dig this track, maybe some house deejays but I am not quite sure. Great track to listen to at home but in a club, I don’t think this would do any dancefloor damage.
Stereotype Mix is a different mix than what you would expect from a Marine Parade release. I’m not quite sure what genre it is exactly because it seems more garage than breaks but both seem to combine. It is a slower version of the song (probably about 10 bpm slower). Just as you think that the track will take off, it keeps the same pace throughout the track. I can see people adding this, who like to play a slower song in their sets. I’d probably pitch this up because it is so slow. Still carries all the elements from the original but with some cool effects but you keep getting the impression that the track will pick up at some point but it never does. It could be that I am just someone who rather have a faster track but when the track drags on, you start to wonder, why give me false hope that the track will take off.
Conclusion:
Verdict – Stereotype Mix is too slow and the Original Mix never did anything for me but I would buy it alone for the Adam and Evil Rokaus Mix. I enjoy the darker breakbeat mixes and think it would be great to add to my collection. Wait for part 2 of the double release, it has even more variety to offer the buying public. Out Jan 2004
