What happens when you cross 2 silly minded producers with a bagful of ideas and add some different takes on chillout? You get Lemon Jelly and their 2nd album is no different. Read on for the full review
Lemon Jelly is a UK based duo who likes to make fun music to chill out and relax to. Nick Franglen is a producer who has produced Primal Scream, Bjork and even the GASP! Spice Girls. The other part of Lemon Jelly is Fred Deakin who is a deejay and a graphic designer (who designs the covers of their releases). Together they are Lemon Jelly and they are so cheeky, they bought the domain name from the Caymen Islands, so their website would read lemonjelly.ky. This is their 2nd album and the Downtempo/Chillout album for January 2004 and it is called Lost Horizons, which was originally released in 2002 but I have decided to highlight it because it was so much fun to listen to.
Elements is a horn based song which opens very well for this album. It gives you more of what is to come. You suddenly realize that this is no average chillout album.
Space Walk is a walk through the park type song. It has this laid back feel with these cool samples “It’s Just Beautiful” going through out the song. It sounds weird but it works and it is relaxing but seems like a funky version of a spacewalk because other songs that I have heard have been darker (like the GU019 Pole Folder Song that used the Apollo Sample in it).
Ramblin’ Man has this cool intro with a weird sample that goes through out the entire song. Two Englishmen talking about houses and he says near the end that he is Ramblin’ Man. They add a flute to great effect here with a sunny feel backing track. I’m Ramblin’ Man, he keeps going on about but I’m not keep sure why the vocal is used but the instrumental works. He just keeps Ramblin about nothing during the entire song with a great sunny feel.
Return to Patagonia starts with a “Where are we” Sample. Next it sounds like a train is starting with an almost jazzy chillout feel, if that makes sense. You really need to hear how unique this track for yourself. They throw in a saxophone at some points, which gives it the jazzy chillout feel. I can see Gilles Peterson (Radio 1 Jazz DJ) playing this song because of the jazz feel and the jazz influences.
Nice Weather for Ducks is a song with an English Man singing “All the Ducks are swimming in the water” over this crazy beat. Here you realize that this should appeal to kids at some point.
Experiment #6 continues the trend of silly and crazy ideas. You wonder after this song, what were they thinking?
Closer is a laid back track that gives you the impression of floating in the air. You still wonder what are they thinking?
The Curse of Ka’Zar – I’m not sure how to describe this one. It’s a truly weird song with jazz influences.
Tracklist
1.Elements 2.Space Walk 3.Ramblin’Man 4.Return To Patagonia 5.Nice Weather for Ducks 6.Experiment Number 6 7.Closer 8.The Curse of Ka’Zar
Conclusion:
Verdict – For those who want a change from the ordinary chillout/downtempo albums then this is for you. It may not appeal to everyone but it’s a nice change for me
