The latest pair of tracks to be presented by Armada's Captivating Sounds record label are 'Starburst and Profound by Octagen & Arizona. What can we expect from the stables of one of the biggest and freshest trance labels around? Why the biggest and freshest trance tracks on release of course...!
This is the fourth release on Captivating Sounds since it became part of Armada back in 2003. Producer Arizona, who was responible along with Greg Murray for the awesome 'Daylight' on Afterglow, has teamed up with Octagen to produce two new pieces of trance to add to Armada's impressive catalogue.
:: Octagen & Arizona - Starburst/Profound :: Captivating Sounds :: CVSA004
A: Starburst Starburst begins easily with a meaningful beat made more interesting with some sweeping ambient sfx in the background. This allows some simple percussion to ease its way in, along with a gentle bassline in the background. Almost the entire first half of this track is used to ease you firmly into the sound - its not a build up this time, but something far more subtle. You soon notice a synth poking a few notes at you through the sound which develops into something much firmer after a short while. The synth itself has a wonderful trancey sound. Its very sustained, isn't cutting at all but still manages a clean crisp and fresh sound. The breakdown cuts everything out except a few ambient synths which play a few notes the main melody is based on before the main synth begins to come into life. It plays out the held back melody in waves, before finding a beat to back it up and then pushes off into the main section - full melody, beats, bass and percussion. The melody this time is comprised of more notes filling in the longer gaps and is a good progression from what initially began near the beginning. This track has a certain 'fullness' to it - everything seems to fit perfectly and the backing bed of synth doesn't provide a single gap in the sound. Along with the beautiful sounding melody this track just effortlessly carries itself along and so is a real pleasure to listen to.
B: Profound Okay, I have a confession to make. Initially, I was so entranced by 'Starburst' on the A side of this record, that I didn't properly take in how good 'Profound' is too! Now I see the error of my ways and I can assure you will be paying a lot of attention to this side of the record also. 'Profound' has a different style compared with 'Starburst'. Instead of easing you in, building and progressing to a peak, it creates a base sound quickly and then uses slight variations and breakdowns to make differences and progressions noticeable. The base sound consists of a relatively powerful beat backed by simple but interesting percussion, a quick, repetitive and jittery electronic sounding synth in the background and a deep, thick driving bassline. As the tune gets further in, a synth joins in. Its very easy to miss this addition - its very subtle but after a short breakdown you can hear this synth subtly emphasising notes in the background. The main breakdown is very ambient and uses a gradual build up of the main kick drum along with a quick hit of flanger to take it into the main section. The sound here is very powerful and complete. The deep bass and subtle synth meld together making a great sound which drives the track along. Overlaid upon this is a simple ghostly melody playing on a synth which sounds a lot like flute. After another short break, the melody is removed and a gritty arpeggiated sound is used for more subtle variation. This track is one of those that builds slightly towards the end - it uses the addition and removal of certain elements of the percussion as it has previously in the track, to alter the sound slightly. Its very driving trance, I wouldn't call it progressive though - that would be understating it somewhat I think.
Conclusion:
'Starburst' and 'Profound' are two brilliant pieces of trance. 'Starburst' takes the uplifting melodic approach while 'Profound' relies on power, drive and subtle variations. Smashing trance which is bound to be played and played into 2004 and beyond.
