Its been a while since Project Medusa's last appearance on Liquid, but now they've come up with 'Eclipse'. Liquid has been able to show off some very nice recent releases in the close of 2003, so will 'Eclipse' be able to continue in this good trend into 2004...?
Project Medusa produced 'Something Is Wrong' in 2001; they did some remixing, had some album appearances and worked alongside Exor on 'Moonshine' in 2002. Now, at the very end of 2003 they bring 'Eclipse' to us. Sporting a bright orange sleeve, a place on Armin Van Buuren's playlist and backed up by Liquid Recordings, how do the Soho Remix and Exor's Original Mix, which are contained on this disc, perform?
:: Project Medusa - Eclipse :: Liquid Recordings :: LQ037
A: Soho Remix The Soho Remix of 'Eclipse' is, in terms of structure and make-up, a relatively standard piece of trance. However, its execution and the attention to detail that was observed in its production make it something rather special. It begins simply enough - good kick, percussion and some ambient sfx. A lively bassline is added along with some percussion with a little more bite. The breakdown comes around quite quickly - with good reason, its longer than most. Here, the main melody is brought in slowly and gently. A quiet and soft sounding synth brings it in, getting louder and louder, while the synth itself develops a sharper edge to its sound. The melody itself isn't complicated - its only made up of a few notes but that doesn't matter because it just sounds absolutely beautiful! After getting back into the swing of things after the breakdown and looping the melody a couple of times, a subtle layer of synths playing chords in the background is added. This thickens the sound nicely and adds a wonderful sense of harmony. Next, there is a quieter section which is missing the main melody - this leads into a short breakdown where the melody is re-introduced in the fashion it initially came about in. The main section is played through again and then the track leads off gently to its close.
B: Exor Original Mix The beginning of this mix, in particular, is quite interesting. It starts out as a very ambient chillout style track with big off beat bass booms every 4 beats, lots of ambience, a very Robert Miles - Children-esque piano and a nicely chilled breakbeat drumline. This carries on for a good few minutes before there is a sudden eerie break which brings on the onset of a strong 4/4 kick. Percussion and a bassline very alike the one in the Soho Remix comes in but the bass is soon enhanced by the addition of another bass instrument playing off beat. This gives the track more strength to drive itself and also a more urgent feel. Another difference between the two mixes shows next as the main melody begins to come in gently and slowly as before, but during a main beat driven section. This is nice because even though not much is actually happening, the feeling of increasing power is very apparent. The main breakdown follows next. It is very quiet with a new and rather abrupt instrument - like a heavily reverberated 'drop' effect, of sorts - playing some choice notes before the main melody and bassline are faded in, only to be filtered heavily out and back in to propel you into the main section where even the new instrument from the break down plays on top of the melody, emphasising notes of the main synthline. There is a shorter quiet section but again, the main melody is built back up in the beat driven section before another very short breakdown and repetition of the main section before the track removes its layers one by one and comes to a close.
Conclusion:
This disc of Project Medusa - Eclipse contains two solid mixes of this great tune. The Exor Original Mix has some interesting features such as the chillout intro and 'outside of the box' thinking in terms of melody introduction while the Soho Remix takes the pure trance route and produces some beautiful sounds with the melodic and background synths. Great stuff!
