Armin Van Buuren's latest production comes to us on the Euphonic label in the guises of a Ronski Vocal Mix and a remix by the trance duo Kyau Vs. Albert. Has the time Armin spent away from the decks and large crowds paid off...?
Its fairly obvious that this track is going to gain a lot of attention. For one its been produced by one of the worlds biggest trance DJs, its been remixed by some hot names and of course Armin will be playing his own stuff in his own weekly ASOT shows no doubt. What you have here are two pretty mellow trancey affairs. The Ronski Vocal Mix, quite clearly, focuses on the vocal element of trance and keeps the body of the sound sort of minimal. The Kyau Vs. Albert Remix goes straight for the heart of pure trance with lots and lots of synth. Heres how they turn out...
:: Armin Van Buuren - Burned With Desire :: Euphonic Test Pressing :: EUPH034
A: Ronski Vocal Mix This mix begins very typically - a very standard kick and hihat affair with a sprinkling of electronic instrument to avoid an empty sound. A lively yet light bassline is added, along with that typical Chicane-esque, delicate synth tapping out a mini melody in the backgrounds. The female vocal sings out a verse before the breakdown comes about. The beginning of the breakdown features only the delicate synth for a moment and a big ambient sweep, at which point the track could easily be mistaken for something by chicane or even one of the chilled mixes of Envio's 'Touched By The Sun'. Things are synthed up a bit now and the vocals come in again before the track kicks back into motion. Even in the main sections, this remix seems to be lacking in body, and the sound feels somewhat empty. From here, the track basically repeats itself and then goes off to a close.
B: Kyau Vs. Albert Remix Straight away this remix boasts a much stronger feel. The main beat is strong and really booms, almost doubling up as a bassline. Theres also some more interesting percussion over the standard stuff here too. A short breakdown comes next, where a bassline is introduced and cleverly broken up and edited samples of the vocal are played. Another thing you notice about this remix is that there are lots of little blips and boops of sfx used all over the place - its all quite creative and adds some spice to the mellow trance side of things. There is an extended breakdown next, with more ambience and broken up vocal samples. But then, the full chorus vocal is introduced. This vocal has been heavily sampled - some reverb, a lot of chorus and it just sounds really really nice. It almost has trance synth-like qualities and because of that sounds lovely. Its a shame though that it only features in the remix once. The main section that follows is lead by a very trancey but light sounding synth that envelops everything and carries the track along. This mix has a very drawn out end - every little bit and layer is removed one by one until you're left with the end.
Conclusion:
'Burned With Desire' is a good piece of trance with a nice and not over the top vocal element. However, the Ronski Vocal Mix is a bit flat sounding - a little on the empty side, while the Kyau Vs. Albert Remix brings home the trance for sure and sports a truly beautiful sounding vocal breakdown but again nothing really happens in the track. How much you like this release will basically depend on how heavily you're into your trance.
