Tor Midtbø from Norway bought himself a cd by the artist Cesaria Evoras. Well home he tried playing it in his brand new Sony dvd-player, but it wouldn't work. Examining the cover closely he saw the cd was copy-protected.
He wrote a letter to BMG Norway asking them for a normal cd of this recording that would work in his dvd-player. He emphasized that he was an active music-buyer for over 20 years and thought it was sad that the record-companies, in panic of piracy, introduced unfinished copyprotections on their releases.
As a reply he was offered to get his money back, but Tor Midtbø replied he didn't want the money, he wanted the music. After a few days he got a letter in his mail containing a burned copy of the cd that worked in his dvd-player.
This means BMG are allowed to make burned copies of their releases to make versions playable everywhere, while the ordinary customer have to adapt to the record-companies strange cd-formats when they choose their cd-players as they can not make a copy of the protected cd themselves to make it play everywhere.
