The highly anticipated 'Kallocain' by Swedish producer Endre has made its initial touchdown! This one is already firmly on Armin Van Buuren's playlist and is surely destined to be hammered by the rest of the big trance names...
The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the title of this track was, "Wow, thats an interesting name - what is 'Kallocain'?". Well, Kallocain is actually the name of a Swedish novel which depicts a rather drab and terrifying future.
Anyway, putting classical literature aside, I must mention something about 'Kallocain's producer, Endre. His real name is Alex Sjöström and he has gone from bedroom musician to big label producer and making a massive impression with an astounding track all by the mere age of 17!
This promo vinyl sports the Original Mix of 'Kallocain' and a remix by Robert Nickson, who already has a release signed to the ASOT label. 'Kallocain' is set for general release on March 1st.

A: Original Mix Right from the start of this track, when you hear the solid beat, the well balanced and well rounded bassline and the constant presence of all kinds of well produced fx, you know this track just oozes quality. It doesn't take long for some nice synths to start working their way in. Initially, there is a synth in the background working away at the same note. Then, as the main chord progression is subtly introduced, other softer synths fade in from the background and begin to back this up. They gradually become more dominant and become the main feature that your ears home in to. It is hard to pick out individual synths once the track has built up since they all work with each other and meld together to create a sound of true beauty. The breakdown focuses on these soft lead synths as they tease you with the main melody and receive backup by some very well placed vocal samples. The synths gain some more power and really step to the front of the arena as they begin to build up. As they intertwine with the kick roll the hairs on the back of your neck will stand to attention and when the track drops you will know this is 'one of those' trance moments. Theres not much I can say other than the melody is truly beautiful. It is not hard hitting, its not a hyperactive trance hook - its very smooth, soft and flowing and it creates a wonderful sea of melody. Its just absolutely gorgeous. You're given a less intense breather period before another short breakdown followed by a slightly different and even nicer build up - which is a great bit of variation. This drops you back into the final main section of pure melodic bliss until the final wind down sections of the track play out to the end.
B: Robert Nickson Remix The Robert Nickson Remix sounds more mellow to begin with due to the chunkier beat, the small streaks of sfx and the very prominent percussion at the beginning. The bassline is much stronger and dominating than in the original but it exchanges feeling for strength. The synths creep their way in, but instead of acting as leads in the foreground, they take a backing position and really fill the track with the soft beautiful notes of the tracks melody. After two short breaks, a new element is added to the track. It is an acute little synth playing some simple notes over the top of the backing melody and its a very nice complement to what already sounds so nice and fulfilling. This final main section repeats and then the track begins its wind down.
Conclusion:
What an absolutely awesome track! Endre has produced something special here. It captured me and I loved it the first moment the melody kicked in. The Robert Nickson Remix is a good variation but the Original comes out on top of the two. 'Kallocain' is a true piece of melodic trance mastery - excellently produced and flawlessly executed. Absolutely superb!
