Well When you see a lineup that Includes Mauro Picotto and Chris Liebing, you're bound to be excited, so I sent resident Techno Junkie Jeff to enjoy! Here's his review..
Well we were all well up for the prospect of banging techno, and thats certainly what we got!
We walked in at 9:15pm to a pretty much empty club, and at first i thought "this isnt going to be busy".. but i was very wrong! by 10:30 the place was packed!
Festivities were kicked off with nick lunn and sterling moss. They were supposed to do seperate sets i think, but they kept switching over and having back 2 back fun. If anything (although i was loving it) it was a little too hard for a warm-up. Sterling Moss seemed as though he needed the crowd, as neither of them were particularly technically brilliant at the start, but as soon as the place filled up Sterling Moss was fantastic! With plenty of very good mixing and a lot of quality effects work, he sure got the place jumping. Nick Lunn however should have stayed at home... He was playing great tunes, don't get me wrong, but he couldn't seem to grasp the concept of bringing a track in at a certain point. At times he seemed quite random. But hey, alls well that ends well!
It got to 12 and up came Picotto. Now i havent seen him for over a year, and needless to say I couldn't wait. And we were not let down! Quite possibly one of the most interesting and original sets I've heard. Mixing up lots of techno with a bit of techy hard trance, and even fitting in ashtrax - digital reason (ogenki clinic mix) which was very surprising to hear in a banging set, but worked incredibly well. Picotto was most definitely on form with both his mixing and his tune selection, which led me to the conclusion that he is still Gandalf.
So after 3 hours of Mauro, up stepped Chris Liebing, who to be fair, had his work cut out after Picotto's set. He started maybe a little flat, but then he got it going again after 20 minutes or so. Once he had won the crowd back, OH.. MY.. GOD! 2 hours of the most ludicrously hard & funky techno all mixed with sheer genius on the decks. At one point Liebing had 4 tunes all in, beatmatched perfectly, cued perfectly, cutting and also playing with the FX unit on the DJM600. You could tell that he was fucking loving it, and by the end of his set he had the biggest smile ever on his face (and my brain had been turned to Spam). I had a quick chat with him, he was a really sound guy, and very humble. I will definitely be going to see him again.
Then it was the turn of Storm resident, Phil Young. Technically he was very good, he played a lot of old stuff, but good stuff none the less. I think he had bad luck getting put on after Liebing, as he had an impossible act to follow.. You could tell he was dying to play Hard House, and to be honest it would have felt right if he did!
All in all a superb night, one of the best I have had in a long while. It was a pity that more of the club wasn't open (neither of the chillout rooms were open) and drinks were a bit pricey, but i didn't really care!
Huge Thanks for Jeff for the report & To the Storm crew for the Ticks, looks like he can't wait to come back!
