What happens when you have a breakbeat producer who decides to get a drum'n'bass MC to help with his newest productions. Good? Bad? Well Read On to find Out!

General Midi is unknown to some and known to others but you all have heard his productions. General Midi is really DJ Paul Crossman, who with Al Watson, make up the very much in demand Starecase production team. This is General Midi using his alias for another release on Rennie Pilgrem’s “TCR” label. He gets help from Jakes, who is most recognized as the MC for the drum’n’bass outfit called E-Z Rollers.

General Midi Featuring Jakes – Bass Rokkaz/Entertainer (RENN 3082)

Side A – Bass Rokkaz

Side A is probably best classified as dirty electro breaks. It uses the vocals of Jakes and also has Miss Byrony Blue helping out. It starts with a nasty bassline, which is heavy and just dirty sounding. This is how basslines for electro breaks tunes should be!. It has Jakes with the Bass Rokkaz vocal with a nasty bassline built around it. Then you hear Miss Byrony Blue singing for an extended period. This song works very well because they combine vocals with a heavy electro breaks bassline. This would work incredibly well in a club. I love the heavy bass and the combination of Miss Byrony Blue and Jakes, it gives you a unique track.

Side B – Entertainer

Side B continues the trend of heavy basslines. Jakes raps over most of it, what is he rapping about, I have no clue but somehow it fits into the song. This reminds me of Roots Manuva when he worked with Leftfield and they made Dusted. A precedent was set back then and that was probably not even the first time that it was done. The vocal is irritating. but after a few listens; it grows on you like “Pray For You”. Jakes makes the most of this song, even though some will dislike the vocal completely, it works with the track well. General Midi sure picked the right person with Jakes, even thought he is unheard of by some but it makes this song better.

Conclusion:
General Midi makes another stomper of a 12” with two bass heavy tracks. He utilizes Jakes to his full potential here, even thought you cannot understand the lyrics that clearly in the 2nd song. It really does not matter because these are two club friendly tracks. So if you like your basslines, dirty and bass heavy then go get buy this.
