With today's releases, you are used to the same old sound and the same old ideas, well you are in for a change with this album. Totally diferrent then anything you have ever heard, how different and why? Read on to find out!
Pork Recordings is a Hull, UK based company that rather put out music and avoid the hype of the music industry. Originally started by Porky and Steve Cobby over a decade ago, it was an outlet for musicians to be creative with their music. They are known for downtempo, chillout and trip hop releases but putting their releases in a category is not right. They release whatever they feel sounds good and if it fits a certain genre then so be it but if it does not fit a genre, they don?t care. Pork Recordings is all about releasing music that they like and they feel good about. Referencered is an alias of an artist named Douglas McClusky. There is not much information available on him but I would assume that they rather let the music speak for itself. This album is a fun loving time and they tend to poke fun at different things at different times. It is also a journey into well crafted downtempo tunes as well.
Referencered ? For Your Safety (Pork 095)
1.Pattie Buttie
This starts the fun loving times, right off the bat. Pattie Buttie is a guitar driven song with a nice drumline. It has a vocal that goes ?Think About It?, which repeats itself. Some samples of laughs are thrown in, further on in this track. The song breaks down and has the sample of ?This is how we play our duets? then they revert back to the vocal. This song is ended by a sample, which says ?I Bet I Had You Moving? and a laugh. This is an innovative way to start an album.
2.Log Rhythm.
This continues the fun loving times. Log Rhythm is a funky drum driven track, which has this noise (which I have no clue how to describe it) and it repeats itself over the drumline. After two songs, you can tell that the artist likes to have fun with his music.
3.Electronic Beats Made Easy
This starts with another sample ?This Lesson concerns the left hand only?. Then the drum line kicks in and as it starts to go, this other sample comes in saying ?In Harmony? and the speed increases everytime this is said. It ends with the speed at a very fast tempo.
4.Alone in the Crowd
Song four starts off with a sample of kids singing and then alternates with a robot sounding sample. It is built around a heavy bassline.
5.Humid Being
Song five is one of the many downtempo songs on this album. This is a soothing sample free song, which calms the tempo a bit after many songs with samples.
6.Watching the Six O?Clock News
Watching the Six O?Clock News begins with a carnival style drum beat and then kicks the fun level into overdrive with a guy singing the French song ?Allouette?. It is a tremendously upbeat song and then near the end of the song, they add sound effects to give you the impression that the cd is skipping. Top marks for innovation here.
7.Rememory
Here we start off with the sound of steel drums or something sounding similar to it. About a minute into the song, a vocal kicks in and it?s not quite clear. Some laughing samples are thrown in, which continues the fun times theme. The laughing samples are interspaced at parts, it really makes creative use of samples.
8.Tribute to PSS-140
I?m not sure if this is a tribute to a public school. This is another calming tune. You hear flutes with a soothing bassline here at the beginning. You hear what sounds like an altered xylophone in places. The bassline beats almost double in places and the nice melody overtakes you. Here the artist is taking the mood down after all the fun sample tracks.
9.So Far, So Good
This is hard to describe but all that really needs to be said about this track is that it is another calm and soothing downtempo track.
10.All Hallow?s Eve
A guitar drives this song but it goes well with the choppy beats of the bassline. It uses this unknown noise in places and fits rather well. This is another well crafted song.
11.Cave Diary
Track eleven is the shortest track on this album, clocking in about a minute and a half. A very choppy bassline starts this track and this chant which reminds me of an almost druid chant is utilized very well, with the drums being added. Cave Diary is a very unique track.
12.Evening Plower
This is driven by what sounds like a filtered organ. They throw in the samples of kids crying every so often. It slows down at the end and adds some scratches to end it.
13.Warming Up Calm
Out of the twenty one tracks on this album, this is my favorite song. It is so downtempo and chilled, which makes nice use of drums and uses a guitar riff in places. Warming Up Calm is a very calming song.
14.Atom Factory
Atom Factory is similar to ?Pattie Buttie? in certain respects. The beats sound similar but not exact and the song is in the same mould as ?Pattie Buttie?. A sample saying ?Stereo? brought in.
15.A Monkey Wrote This Song
First of all, the title is unique and I doubt a monkey wrote this song. This begins with a Caribbean style instrument, which almost sounds like a tweaked steel drum. A very short song but very powerful with the instrumentation and contains a beach feel.
16.Naked Ear.
This downtempo song makes great use of a xylophone. It is similar to ?A Monkey Wrote This Song? in certain aspects. It is very relaxing but it is also very short, clocks in slightly over 2 minutes.
17.The Other White Meat
Here they pay homage to the other white meat, which is Pork and is the same name as the record company that released it. It has a chilled out feel with some nice drums and has a vocal that whispers ?Pork?. At some points, it is louder than others and at some points, it is very faint and almost subliminal. This makes creative use of a sample and it gets to the point, where you expect to hear Pork in your mind even when it is not used.
18.Driving Me Sane
This can be described as a calm, relaxing downtempo tune. It makes creative use with the drums, which the album makes great use of.
19.Still Alone in the Crowd
I believe this is part 2 to "Alone in the Crowd", which was song four. The songs are similar in certain respects (similar parts and same samples). It is more chilled than "Alone in the Crowd". Most songs near the end of this album have been sample free and been more downtempo and calmer.
20.The Hibernation
An organ type sound drives this song with drums used as the bassline. It makes nice use of a sample that goes ?They are playing our song?. This is downtempo like most of the last few songs.
21.Pond
Pond is the last track and it keeps the downtempo direction of the album intact. It sounds like it is driven by an organ type sound, not quite an organ but has the qualities of one. A great way to finish off the album

Conclusion:
Pork Recordings does it again by releasing this unique gem of an album. It is crazy and fun loving in parts and you can tell that the person making it likes to make unique music. I enjoyed it, it started off very different from anything I've ever heard and then moved into mostly downtempo tracks near the end and it was a joy to listen to. This album has a bit of everything and it shows that Pork Recordings rather let their artists make unique music then sucking up and making something that sounds so much like something that has been done.
