i:Vibes.nu has a new feature and in the upcoming weeks and months, we will show you the other side of life to deejays/artists/producers. We want to show what's life really like married to a deejay/artist/producer by asking their spouse. We want to show how the spouse's life has changed, what are the challenges, what doors have be opened up because of their relationship to a deejay/artist/producer. Interview 1 is Sasja Splint, wife of Michael Splint (club gorgeous resident).
i:Vibes: Were you introduced to music at an early age?
A: Yes, my father was (and still is) a musician. So I was actually lying in my portable crib when he was out playing - I´m told I was "on tour" with him at age 8...months:-). So music was a steady part of my growing up from the very beginning...
i:Vibes: What did you listen to growing up?
A: At first I was very much into Chicago, Peter Cetera, Level 42, Beatles, Patsy Cline and Michael Jackson. In my late teens I also discovered Alison Moyet, Madonna, Talk Talk, Tears For Fears and my all time favorite Fairground Attraction.
i:Vibes: Before you met Michael, how were you involved in music?
A: Well...Karaoke tours and music for commercials with my dad. Then I started a dance act with some guys but turned down the contract we got offered it was simply too sucky. I quit the band and a little while on I met a guy called Asle and was introduced to trance. It was around 98 and the scene was just growing and growing we wanted our piece of the pie.
We formed a "band" - they did the music and I was the main character Davinah. We had two minor hits in Denmark with our 2 singles "Innocent Child" and "Sunshine After The Rain" - the first one was co-written by me. As you might have read in my bio, we then got caught up in record company politics and we decided to part ways.
i:Vibes: How has your music career changed after meeting Michael?
A: Going from not knowing what to do after the split, I owe a lot to Michael and his good friend Michael Parsberg who got me in contact with Ayla (DJ Tandu). He had a track that should appear on a Techno Club compilation which he needed vocals for. I received a sound clip and penned the lyrics in a night. He really liked the results and I was invited to his studio to see if we could come up with something for his forthcoming Ayla album. Because of Michael's ability to promote my voice, I have done a lot of different things with a lot of different people and continue to do so still.
i:Vibes: What's your opinion of Michael's deejaying skills, his productions and his musical skill?
A: Let´s take that from the top...DJ´ing skills...I find that Michael reads the crowd really well, he¹s not afraid to play something people know he doesn't play all new stuff to look more hip or anything like that. When push comes to shove, it's about having a good time and having a good time includes the classic tunes, that when you hear them you get that special joy of recognition. When I'm out with Michael I like to hear the new stuff, but I also wanna have my share of classics.
His productions are fast improving. He's only done it for little over a year, but he has a lifetime of experience - that's his input. Musical skills I guess that´s a difficult question neither Michael or I can play any instruments, but we know excactly what we want a tune to sound like.
i:Vibes: What's his opinion of your musical talent (In your own words)
A: Michael thinks I'm the next vocal goddess. At least once a week I get a textmessage from him, saying "Honey you are truly an amazing singer". So I guess that's his opinion of my musical talent - I'm a little more humble myself not something that pleases Michael he feels I should have much more confidence in myself.
i:Vibes: What's the best part of being married to a deejay/artist/producer?
A: First and foremost the best part isn't that he's any of the above. The best part is that I love him no matter what he is. Second the great thing about being married to a DJ/artist/producer is that he believes in me, he supports me and we have this unique thing together and that's a very important thing if you wanna make a marriage work in this business.
i:Vibes: What's the hardest part of being married to a deejay/artist/producer?
A: Hm...right now there is no hard part, as we both want to make "something" happen and use as much available time on music as we can. We don't have any obligations or anyone to answer to other than ourselves. Of course we know things might change when we eventually have children but hey so many others are doing it why shouldn't we.
i:Vibes: Have you found it easier to do musical things since marrying Michael or have you found it harder to do musical things?
A: I wouldn¹t say easier just more naturally. Michael's been in the game a little longer than I, so of course he knows a little more than me about all the political stuff (but only a little:-)) so in that sense you can say easier.
i:Vibes: Michael has a spot on his website devoted to you, do you find that you are recognized more often because of this and have you become a celebrity because of it?
A: Not at all not in a big scale of any kind at least. Some Danish DJ's and some Swedish clubbers say hi to me, but I¹m far from being stopped on the street to write autographs.
i:Vibes: How has your music background affected Michael, has it helped him in any way?
A: Not really, but he was very surprised of my musical knowledge as it's not really common for girls to have such we are mostly perceived as pop chicks listening to top 40 on the radio all the time.
i:Vibes: Ever considered taking up deejaying because Michael deejays?
A: He he....On my bachelorette party I played an hour in a club in Copenhagen. That was great fun and we've talked about it a couple of times, but have never gotten round to it.
i:Vibes: Do you get treated in a special way because you are the spouse of a deejay/artist/producer? (I.E in clubs, around town)
A: I wanna think so yes:-) Where Club Gorgeous has it¹s residency I'm known and notorious for my very VERY happy mood when in company with my girlfriends and a nice bottle of vodka, this happens on an increasingly fewer occasions though...
i:Vibes: Do you tag along with Michael when he goes to gigs? How often and if you do, are you in the dj booth or on the dancefloor?
A: Sure I do. We've been out a few times with me performing during his set as well, but usually I'm equally on the dancefloor, in the booth and in the bar.
i:Vibes: Do you ever wish that Michael was doing something that was not music related?
A: No! it can be put as simple as that. I love music and knows how much Michael loves it.
i:Vibes: How do you cope with being married to a person that is so busy?
A: Sometimes I feel he's away too much and I really miss him. The funny thing is his studio is only 10 minutes away from our home, so I could without any problem get over there and say hi. But most of the time it's ok as I work full time during the day, have girlfriends I meet up with once or twice a week and of course I also spend time writing. So in general it's nothing that bothers me that much.
i:Vibes: What's the biggest misconception about the wife of a dj/producer/artist?
A: It's gotta be that we only got to where we are by sleeping with him and stuff like that I've heard that a couple of times because I sing....Or that you are nothing but his "nice piece of ass" to show off at parties...We do have a life of our own and also intelligence to speak up for ourselves.
i:Vibes: What does the future hold for the two of you?
A: Professionally there are lots of stuff on the way. The follow up to "I Feel Free" is ready...it's entitled "Secrets Broke My Heart", I did the vocals for a beautiful instrumental track by Swedish producer Mark Damon called "Together" and also "song To The Siren" which I did with Danish producer team Jox. Then I have a few tracks we will start looking at during the next couple months. Hopefully we will do more live gigs I have an appearance in late May in Sweden at a new music festival. On the personal level...as it says in Michael's biography no children.
We would like to thank Sasja Splint for being the first interviewee for our new feature "So I Married A DJ". We wish her and Michael, all the best in the future. This probably will be the first of many times, you will hear of Sasja and Michael because the future looks bright for both of them. Special thanks for Michael for being the catalyst for this idea and for allowing us to interview Sasja.
