For the last few months, M.I.D.O.R. & Six4Eight have shown us that they can produce very versatile and innovative productions. Their first single EP "7th Heaven / Cloud City" did very well last year, and now they're back with a new 2-tracker.. read on to find out if it continues the tradition!
M.I.D.O.R. (Rutger van Bostelen) and Six4Eight (Eelke Kleijn) are relatively new producers in todays trancescene. Though they haven't been there for such a long time, they have already made numerous succesful remixes for reknown artists as Dito, Neo & Farina and Talla 2XLC. Their first two releases were on DJ Precision's Somatic Sense label, but they seem to have switched to Intensive Music.. let's see.
A-side: Point Zero
Directly at the beginning we can hear this is just slightly more techy than their previous releases. A bit of original percussion and a nice background layer bring us towards the bassline, which sounds nicely crafted and rolling. A subtle synthline gets its introduction, playing a simple chord-scheme for now. Strings get added later on, and as the track progresses we get to the first full break. Silence appears for 1 second.. perhaps 2 seconds, and then a Cloud City-like melody kicks in your face immediately. Many people were blown away by the way Cloud City's melody kicked in, so the guys seemed to have picked this up and used it again, and I msu say in a very well and effective way. The full climax sounds very energetic, perfect for mid-time in a good tranceset. After this a second build-up and climax appear, concluding in the build-off.
B-side: No Mans Land
If you wouldn't know this was produced by M.I.D.O.R. & Six4Eight, you'd say you would be listening to a Marco V. production at first sight. A tight, harsh beat with some techy percussion serve as the intro for this track, leading us to the one-minute mark where we get treated by an immense, deep bassline. The beat kicks in again, only to build us up to a mini-break which consists of the first tones of a minor, but very effective backgroundsynth. After a while a second mini-break enters, which serves as the intro for a repetitive and very Marco V`ish melody. Beats are bursting in again, leading us to the main break part. The percussion and synthlines lower down their volume to be replaced by a relaxing, but rather dark strings-melody. This could be very well implemented in a melodic trance-track, but it fits just right in this techy track as well. After the strings come to an end, a stabbing, powerful techmelody kicks in, which gets backup by the immense beats and bassline a few seconds later. I could surely imagine a crowd going totally mental on this because of the perfect way in which the percussion and melody blend together. After the climax comes to an end the build-off starts as well, enabling the DJ to mix in the next record.
Conclusion:
M.I.D.O.R. and Six4Eight once again have shown us that they are very innovative and have talent for more techy tracks as well. Point Zero is the more trancey side of this EP, being built-up in a nice way and using a powerful energetic melody. Nevertheless I am more intrigued by the power and techy elements of the immense No Mans Land. Powerful percussion and a huge bassline make this track something you won't forget in a long while. Thumbs up!
