Haak - Bass Shuttle / Pulling Strings [Club Elite]

M.I.K.E's sublabel for Armada, Club Elite, releases two tracks from uprising norwegian talent Haak. Read on to find out more about his debut 12"...

After causing waves across trance land with Frenzy, things have exploded for Haakon Vingelsgaard aka Haak. Frenzy's infectious melody and superb production values caugt M.I.K.E's ear early, and after listening to a CDR of his material he decided to grab this talent while he had the chance. His first outing is this double header, and judging by the immense display of talent and creativity on this 12", Armada have managed to grab hold of yet another gem that certainly will lift their already impressive back catalogue to new levels.

The 12" kicks off with Bass Shuttle, which M.I.K.E and Armin van Buuren have been giving support for a while already. Bass Shuttle is a pitch black and squelching journey through some of the most futuristic soundscapes trance has ever encountered since the Harthouse-era. While keeping a deep and dark vibe throughout, the subtle melodies that sweep across the track, the tough, driving beats and a powerful bassline keep the track going, before it all ends up in a morphing synth cascade that sounds absolutely wicked on a big system. Pulling Strings takes the tempo down a notch, and ditches the futuristic vibes in favour of a blissful string break and a chunky, hypnotic groove that surely will get the dancefloor going. Will fit perfectly as a set opener, or to provide one of those mellow and deep moments between all the dance floor mayhem.

Another thing that fascinates me about both Pulling Strings and Bass Shuttle, is Haak's impeccable sense for those small details. Both tracks are virtually bubbling with jumpy FX, beats that squelch and morph as the track progresses and unexpected twists that always gives the listener something new to focus on and providing the tracks with lots of replay value.

Conclusion:
Drawing on inspiration from a multitude of styles and producers, Bass Shuttle / Pulling Strings is without a doubt one of the most innovative and fresh releases that trance has seen for quite a while, if you want to call it trance that is. Look out for Haak and Club Elite in the future, they've got big things in store for 2004.
