Most labels never achieve 100 releases but when the few that do achieve that, it calls for a celebration. This is Pork's Recordings 100th release and have they done anything special for this? Read on to find out.

Pork Records was started in the early 1990's by Steve Cobby and Pork. They set out to let their artists be creative with their music and make the music that they felt was good. They stayed away from the music industry hype and instead let the music speak for itself. This is Pork Recordings' 100th release and it is a landmark for any record label to reach 100 releases.
 Pork 100 (Pork Recordings)

1.Baby Gravy - You Really Are

This track starts the album and it begins with drums and then a laidback groove is added. A deep voice comes in and speaks "yeah yeah you" and another voice comes in right after and says "really are". This is a creative way to use vocals. We then have some cool sounding effects thrown in for good measure here. You get a unique song here and just after the middle of the track, a new vocal comes in saying "You know you are, it's so......" and backed by a nice sax. A unique track to start out an album.

 2.Momma Gravy - Hadakemus

Track number two starts off with a laidback riff and then it is followed by the strumming of a guitar. Some instruments are added in, some are not recognizable but you have a nice flute part come in. A vocal comes in at one point but what language it is in and what it is saying, I don't know. The flute then comes back in, which creates a nice segway and then a funny sample is thrown in and then it reverts back to the melody till the end.

3.Sheik and Arch Deacon - As You All Know

We have this song started by a 1930's era jazzy feel. A piano part is then added then a sample of something (not quite sure what). The song picks up from that point with a downtempo groove that is driven by a guitar. The song continues like that till the very end.

 4.Moss - Ching

Song number four is by Moss and his cd will be reviewed shortly. This is jazz fusion here and from the start, it uses bongos and we have a nice downtempo track here. Enter in a singer who says "Together" then followed by "It Is" repeated. Laugh samples are then thrown into the mix, which creates a unique song that reminds me of Coldcut.

 5.Leggobeast - Elephant

Elephant is a guitar driven, drum backed tune. It makes great use of a black man humming vocal and uses a filtered organ in places. I like it because it gives you this old school feel to it.

 6.Baby Mammoth - Spike's Lament

We start song six with an unknown sound but it has this old school hip hop flavor to it, remind me of Rakim and Eric B. This funky beat starts to get going here and then this addictive melody is brought in. This makes you want to dance, no matter where you are. This song continues this funky groove, through out the entire song till the end.

 7.The Shapes - Fossilized Oesophagus

The title is one of the weirdest titles to a song in history and why did they name it, I don't know. This songs starts slowly and has this filtered organ type sound. You then hear cymbals and right after that, the drums kick in. This is followed by some weird indescribable noises. The best part about this track is the vocal, well at first you think it is a cat making noises but when you listen to it more closely, you realize it is just a few instruments put together to make it sound like a cat. Whoever was behind this song, deserves congrats for making a sample that teases the ears and makes you think, what is that?.

 8.B&B - Mrs.Ripley

Mrs.Ripley begins with drumbeats. This guitar riff enters soon after and plays the same riff over and over. A weird vocal is then added to the mix and it creates another unique downtempo track

 9.Rawcliff - Piggy Back Wind

Song number nine is very similar to "Spike's Lament" in many ways. The part that is most similar about the songs is the old school flavor and the funk. This also reminds me of Eric B and Rakim in places. This begins with the old school flavor then drums are added. A minute and half later, a clarinet is introduced in and soon after, we have this alternating heavy bass. It continues like this until the end of the track. Who said that you could not make downtempo with an old school flavor?

 10.Tetris - Diving Up

This is simply too unique to describe but what can be said is that "Diving Up" is another downtempo song and another song with some weird vocal samples.

11.Last Supper Danceband - New Bionic Boogie

This is another hard to describe tune. New Bionic Boogie is a laidback downtempo song driven by a funky guitar hook.

 12.Dustin - Another Missing Link

Another missing link is the longest song on the album and the last song on the album. This is simply a slow building ambient type tune and ends the album on a good note.

Conclusion:Pork Recordings does it again in giving you unique and quality downtempo music. A label that never sold out to anyone, they focused on what they do best, giving great artists, the launching pad for their music and they put no restrictions on that. Pork Recordings made it to 100 releases by believing in what they liked. This album is fine example of what happens when artists are given complete freedom to create what they feel is best. I hope the next 100 releases are as good as the first 100 releases.
