Filo & Peri's latest pair of tracks are also the latest offering from the almighty stables of ASOT. We have come to expect nothing but the best so how do I:95 and Spectrum fare...?
Filo & Peri - or Bo Pericic and Domenick Filopei - both come from New York. They have both had a passion for music since they were very young. Domenick was an accomplished piano player by the age of 12 and a guitar player by the age of 19, while Bo was trying to create songs on a Nintendo Miracle Keyboard at the age of 6! After initially coming in contact via the internet, it only took a week in the studio to produce their first corker 'Elevation', which was promptly signed to ASOT, Filo & Peri was born.
On the 14th instalment on the ASOT label, we are given two pieces of melodic trance - 'I:95' and 'Spectrum'...
:: Filo & Peri - I:95/Spectrum :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT014
A: I:95 The first thing you notice about 'I:95' is that it has a noticeably faster pace than most melodic trance. This makes the punchy beat and a 'lighter' bassline seem somewhat livelier and kicks the track off a lot quicker. The bass is soon upgraded to a deeper sound and you start to hear smooth waves of synth coming up from the background. The synths become more apparent over the next few minutes, creating a long subtle build up. Next is the breakdown. This is a fairly short and ambient affair with a few very deep bass hits, some muted and filtered drums and some extra synths here and there. The next stage of the break is a breakbeat section which is backed by synths and features the main melody for the first time. This melody is very simple in nature - a few descending arpeggios played by a light sounding piano. After the track has dropped back in, this melody contrasts well with the smooth synths in the background and the punchy beats that are ever present in the foreground. Another thing that is noticeable about this track is its rigid structure - a build, a breakdown, a breakbeat section, the main section and finally a slow and steady wind down. Again simplicity is the key here, and it works very well indeed.
B: Spectrum 'Spectrum' begins with an intro section which consists of some very light percussion, a very soft and quiet instrument playing descending arpeggios, a good layer of smoothing synths and a piano playing a lovely solo. Now, I might be a little biased here, because I love pianos and the sound they make, but it really is a nice intro to listen to! The main track is introduced firmly but maintains balance. What comes in is another punchy beat and a nice, deep bass instrument which loops continuously playing its own little bassline rhythm. Spectrum is also much slower than 'I:95' - its one of those really steady and relaxed pieces of trance. The beginning of this track is again used as one long and steady build up. The soft instrument playing the arpeggios increases its promiscuity slightly, the piano plays a lethargic and easy going melody very subtly in the background and the synths take on an ever growing stance. This is all cut and replaced by another easy going and relaxed piano solo, backed up by synth cover when the breakdown comes around. This is an especially nice breakdown, because each addition is gradually replaced by something else - to begin with, the piano is playing a melody over a synth backing, then this is overcome by some very well polished trance leading synths and then these again are taken over by the soft instrument playing the simple arpeggios. All of these individual parts are reunited when the track drops back in to form a total and complete sound which is really pleasing to the ear. Finally, and as was with 'I:95', 'Spectrum' takes its time to wind down, slowly and steadily.
Conclusion:
'I:95' and 'Spectrum', just like their predecessors 'Elevation' and 'Juicy' are two very nice pieces of trance. This time around, Filo & Peri have opted for the more melodic and soothing sound, and they have pulled this off very well in two nicely contrasting styles of melodic trance. 'I:95' is faster in pace yet still easy on the ears and 'Spectrum' adopts a slower and more rhythmic approach. Again, another winner from ASOT!
