Donald & Giles return on Liquid with their follow up to 'Weekend Wonder'. 'Manufactured' plays on the tougher side of trance and is already receiving support from the likes of Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell, The Thrillseekers, Cosmic Gate, Marcel Woods and Graham Gold, among others...
After a lot of remix work and a few releases spread between 2002 and 2003, Donald & Giles have put together this new piece of tougher edged trance. This is a step in the harder trance direction for Liquid, so here it is showing its muscle - lets see how it fares...
:: Donald & Giles - Manufactured :: Liquid Promo :: LQ040
A: Original Mix The Original Mix of 'Manufactured' begins quietly with a muted beat and bassline just dying to get out. It doesn't take long for the beat to properly kick in, bringing a deep and steady bass along with it. A build up of percussion leads into a short break which is used to introduce a very trebly synth which plays a short repeating melody over the top of the beat and bass. This leads us into the breakdown where everything drops off into a moments silence. Here, a much more powerful sounding trancey synth takes the reigns and plays out a repeating stabbing rhythm. The synth has a strong and defined edge to it while at the same time it remains smooth and flows out nicely - it is very similar to Sam Sharp's style of hard trance. It continues to play after the beat and bass have returned and, every now and again as a section breaks, the synth plays a very nice little rising and falling scale. This happens very quickly with very short but superbly defined notes, creating a cheeky kind of melody which should bring a smile to your face as the track continues to beat along. The main synth takes a breather and the initial light and trebly synth returns to run carry the tune along to the final breakdown. Here, the beat continues and the strong, powerful synth returns, building its rhythmic melody and carrying on with force as the track drops back in. A couple more section ends sees the cheeky sounding scales again, before the synths step back and the track winds down, back to muted bass and eventually just a thin layer of percussion.
What really does it for me in this track is the rapid rising and falling scales which occur every now and then. They break up the stabbing melody very well and add a wonderful bit of quite unexpected spice to the track.
AA: D&G Mix The D&G Mix begins very differently to the original. You have a fairly strong beat backed only by a continuous rumbling of deep bass. This progresses by fading in some very soft and gentle backing chords and some simple percussion. A few notes of quite coarse synth signals the introduction of a chunkier beat and a more pronounced layer of percussion. The sound you have here has a housey hint to it while remaining quite techy at the same time. The breakdown is laced with more light synth which is quickly taken over by a very rough sounding synth playing a repeating, stabbing melody. This is a very interesting sound - it has chunky, housey elements blended with the techy trance synth. Every now and again, a synth very similar to the one used in the Original Mix stabs out a few notes. There is another breakdown, where the same synth makes a full appearance and plays the familiar stabbing melody over the top of a deep, rolling bassline. Things soon step back up to the chunky housey beat and bass but this time with the main synth playing some stabbing chords instead of just single notes for a variation in the sound. Towards the end, the initial deeper synth takes control again and guides the track out to an end.
Conclusion:
There are two very cool and very different mixes of 'Manufactured' on this record. The A side sees to the tougher trance with its dark and powerful sound of stabbing synths, while the AA side takes on a steadier approach with chunky beats and more subdued lead synthlines. Two tracks covering for different occasions, with both being very good to listen to.
