The second installment on the New Reset Records label is the tech-trancer 'Smoke'. This one is doing well with names such as Judge Jules, Blank & Jones, Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Lange, Jon O’Bir, Cor Fijneman, Marcel Woods, Graham Gold, and Cosmic Gate. Read on to find out about 'Smoke'...
After floating around for a while with no artist name attached to it, it was finally revealed that this track was produced by E-Craig, aka Dimitri Siliakus. 'Smoke' takes on a darker and more techy sound than any of his previous tracks...
:: E-Craig - Smoke :: Reset Promo :: RS002
A: Smokin' Mix The Smokin' Mix begins with an intro section, as is becoming more and more popular as of late. This intro consists of a deep and spooky ambient rumble. Soon though, a beat begins pounding away backed by some very light percussion. A soft and deep bassline is the next addition, and this pulses away as more percussion is brought in to provide some more body to the beginning of the track. As this section progresses, you hear rather sinister sounding stabs of synth and sfx. The breakdown features an amusing and cleverly pieced together vocal sample. This leads on to the onset of the lead synth. It is a strong sounding synth with a dark edge and it plays out a steady stabbing rhythmic melody, backed up by some periodic screechy sounding sfx which help to add that dark element to the tech trance sound which has been built up already. This mix adheres to the rule of simplicity, so the main section plays through into another vocal breakdown, after which there is a final main section of nice dark trancey stabbing synths.
AA: Rough Mix The Rough Mix straight down to business after a short and warbley hit of sfx. This mix has a stronger beat and more pronounced percussion than the Smokin' Mix. The bassline is more bubbly as opposed to the pulsating bass of the mix on the A side, and this helps to give the Smokin' Mix a more energetic feel. As the track is warming up before the breakdown, there is a constant hit of a coarse and sinister sounding synth - this provides the dark tech trance sound that this track is all about right from the outset. The breakdown features the funky little vocal and then there follows a long build up as the dark trancey synth brings itself in and readies itself for the main section. This mix features a little 'interlude', if you like, where the main synth drops out and the periodic sinister synth makes its stab every two beats for a short section before the final breakdown. After this small change of scenery, the main synth comes back in and plays out the final main section of this very cool track.
Conclusion:
'Smoke' is a very good track and has a cool feel to it, conveyed through the nice dark tech trance sound. The Smokin' Mix is good and steady while the Rough Mix does nicely when a little more energy is required. These two mixes of this very good track easily carry on from where the good start of Reset Records left off!
