One of the hottest talents around, Terry's just had Introspection released on the Vandit label, and now seems as good a time as any to see what's going on for him!
i:Vibes: Your name is fast being regarded as a hugely promising producer for trance, how long has it taken for you to get to the standard you are at though?
A: First of all, Hello to everybody at i:Vibes. I think that when you do something that you really like, the time you “spend” for doing this thing is never lost. So it takes me some years of good and bad experiences, learning, …. But all things were done without any regrets.
i:Vibes: How have the places you've grown up in influenced you to become a producer?
A: I live in the French part of Belgium. Some years ago, New Beat was born on this country; it was a new kind of music, just influenced by New Wave style, and then, all started for me. My brother, who is 4 years older than me, brought me some recorded dj sets on tape that he bought on parties/club. So I started to love this kind of music, and from this moment, I started to buy 2 old turntables and a little mix table, and of course, tons of records. After some years, I’ve started to produce my own tracks with an Amiga and an old soundtracker. That was my beginning ;)
i:Vibes: Which Producers & DJs were your biggest influences growing up?
A: I think that all the djs I have been lucky enough to see or hear play. By the way, Paul Van Dyk will always stay first in my heart, because his music has influenced my own a lot.
i:Vibes: You are very close to Fred Baker. How did the two of you meet?
A: We met thanks to a friend who introduced me to Fred. I had the bad idea to stop producing music because I was a little bit sad with the bad Belgian scene. Fred gives me the force and the envy to continue. He’s so talented and he’s a very good friend of mine. He’s able to do every kind of style, so he’s not only a very great studio engineer, but he’s also a complete artist!
i:Vibes: What gave you the inspiration to remix Wavy Gravy?
A: In fact, I’ve done this remix for the first contest of this track. I loved the original, which for me is the best version, but I wanted it more “uplifting” to be able to dance to it. I made it in a couple of hours. So, like I’ve never received any support/result/replies from Sasha’s Team, I decided to send it to a lot of ppl who can be able to play it themselves.
i:Vibes: Introspection has been one of the biggest tracks with Paul Van Dyk in the last 12 months. How does it feel to have a DJ rated in the world's best to show an interest in your track?
A: Oh, I just fell of my chair when I learnt that lol ! For me, it’s the recognition of a 10 year fight. Fred and myself are very proud of that.
i:Vibes: You have a show on TranceAirWaves, Has DJing been a big part of your life, or has it come after the producing ?
A: It came after the producing, like I’ve only these residencies (which I’m proud of it too). So I don’t have to travel to play any gigs yet. But I would like to do more gigs... so... I’m waiting for some bookings ;)
i:Vibes: What can we expect from you in 2004 ?
A: A lot of things I hope ! I’m working on a lot of projects and it’s my passion, my job, I can’t live without music ;) so wait and see ;)
i:Vibes: How do you feel the online community has contributed to helping push producers ?
A: Of course it has !! Imagine the world of today without the Internet ! How could I make any good contacts ? Forget it :D
Seriously, the Online community is the base of our passion. I really love to discuss with people who are electronic music addicts like me.
i:Vibes: What else interests you away from Music ?
A: I love : Cinema, Computers, having good times with Friends, Family, .... so I like to have a lot of fun !... … oh and I’m also a big fan of Disneyland !
i:Vibes: With many smaller labels popping up lately, do you feel that is the future for Trance labels, or will the bigger ones ultimately survive longer ?
A: The future for Trance labels, like for the future of Trance or every kind of stuff, can only evolve and stay with serious guys. There is a lot of fake guys who just want money and to be a celebrity. That’s a shame. So, smaller labels can become bigger, by the way, all labels are smaller in their beginning.
i:Vibes: Anything to say to people who read this?
A: Yes, I just want to say hello to some people that I really love:
all my family first, Fred Baker & Liesbet, Pierre & Sabrina, Mitch, DarkWave, L-Vee, DJ Precision, Arturo, Edgar V, Jon O Bir, Alex. (Fowewer), Corinne, Nicolas (cravates), Eric (Cool Rasta), Anne & Christophe, Vascotia, SonicVibe, Matt Adams, Rob Aker, James Cosgrove, George Hales, Niklas Harding, Nige from TAW, Ian (thank you for this interview), davex, Tom (Goldenscan), Wicked_Neo, Greg Kalas, Steven,…… and all the people who support and follow artists and their works…. Thank you all
