Silicon Recordings has had some massive hard/techtrance releases the last few months, and now they're back with 2 new tracks, going under the projectname Jowan. They're on the hardish side of trance again, so read on to find out if this continues the line of quality we have heard from them earlier!
Jowan is a project by Johan van Korven and Michel Pollen. Johan has already done a remix for Nexus - `Venom` (also on Silicon), and we all know Michel from his project Silverblue which has had many hits like Step Back and the immense remix for Syntone - Can't Believe It, which got played by top-DJ's like Johan Gielen.
A-side: Thadderack
This track starts off nicely with a thomping kick, a firm bassline and a techy synth on the background. As the build-up progresses we hear more and more fast percussion being thrown in, accompanied by strong and dark synthlines. At around one minute and thirty secs, a short mini-break enters in which a very subtily repeating line gets added. It grows a bit, until the percussion kicks back in to guide us to the main break part. This starts with a soft string-type of sound and a dolphin echoing around. I expected the break to be a bit longer, but immediately after the dolphin the percussion kicks back in in a fantastic way, drived by a deep and bassy repetitive synthmelody which would drive any club crazy. The climax gets its variation by the use of more sounds on the background, leading us into a second build-up towards a last climax. The break before this has been crafted nicely by using a bit of filtering and a stripped version of the kick. After this the build-off starts, taking approximately one minute to enable the DJ to mix in the next record.
AA-side: Front Loaded
This has already been played by Marcel Woods on Trance Energy 2004, and Giotto DJ from S.H.O.K.K. is also caning it in his sets... A tough kick and a whoomping bassy sound serve as the intro for this side of the vinyl. After a short build-up with hi-hats and snares we get to the introduction of the bassline, which kicks in very nicely together with the main percussion. The track keeps building up until a break starts, which firstly consists of a few of the hi-hats and the bassline. The kick rages in again, but now accompanied by a soft filtered synth on the background. The kicks fade away, and the soft sound becomes a huge darkish synth which is repeating a very simple, but superbly effective melody. More energy gets added on the way to the climax, snares get to the background, after which a very short silence appears... Wham, the percussion kicks in again with all the beats, hats, bassline and that cool melody just on top of it. I imagine this would completely destroy any floor aimed at the harder styles of trance immediately! After this climax, a short build-up to e second climax comes in, this time with a somewhat different and shorter break. When this is all done with, we get to the build-off.
Conclusion:
We've got two amazing techtrancers here. Both tracks have good percussion and rather simple, but oh so effective melodies in them. The way both the tracks kick in after their breaks is marvelous, ensuring any crowd to go mental any time of the evening. Get this right now if you're searching for some quality techtrance!
