Mazziv is a new partyconcept aimed at the harder side of the scene by treating its visitors with the best in trance, techtrance, hardtrance and techno. The first edition was held at a venue in the southwest of the Netherlands called the Arsenaaltheater. With techtrance specialist Marcel Woods headlining the line-up the prospects were very good, read on the find out what the party was like!
The Venue After having travelled for approximately 30 minutes we arrived at the door of the Arsenaaltheater, a building used for almost every type of event, ranging from rock- and pop concerts to dance-events like the one we're attending here. After having been searched (which took rather long; we had to get in one by one. Fortunately it wasn't too crowded at the door at the time we came in.. also, security itself was rather strict, they wouldn't let me take my camera in, though I did have permission) we entered the so called 'CaféZZone', which was being used as a chillout room with nice groovy house music and a bar. The music was at such a volume that talking was still possible without having to scream your fellow's ear off, and the ambiance was nice with some plants and subtle lighting. After getting the coins needed for the drinks and hanging our jackets on the coat rack we entered the 'TheaterZZone', the place where the real beats were emerging. This main floor had the DJ Booth and sound equipment positioned directly at the left of where we came in, decorated with a large sign with 'MAZZIV' on it and a strobe behind it to complete the package. At the direct left and right of the booth were some sort of flags, also with Mazziv on them, creating a smooth symmetric look. Above the place where the DJ was standing was a viewscreen with visuals on it, created by the artist VJb. There were lots of weird videos with sheep and a city, but throughout the odd videos was a live feed of the dancefloor you were standing on, so you could sometimes see yourself going nuts on-screen. The lighting was done nicely: a few moving heads were placed at the left and right sides of the DJ Booth, and right above the dancefloor were a load of scanners and a laser. This looked really nice combined with all the smoke that was being bursted out the smokemachine, creating an overall cool atmosphere.
The Sets Line-up TheaterZZone:
21:00 - 22:00 - Donny Rivella (Fall) 22:00 - 23:00 - Ronnie D (Winter) 23:00 - 00:00 - Thomas Siahaya (Spring) 00:00 - 02:00 - Marcel Woods (Summer)
With encore Ronnie D and Thomas Siahaya.
We entered at about 21:30, so we picked up half of the set Donny Rivella played. He played some banging techno to warm up the crowd for what had to come. I wasn't able to ID any of the tunes because I'm not into techno that well, but it sure sounded nice and stomping anyway. As you can see in the line-up above, each DJ had a special theme going with him. The visuals were also tuned to the themes, images of skiing and snowy landscapes were shown during Ronnie D's set for instance. Second to perform was Ronnie D. This 29-year old Dutchman got the crowd going with a good set of techhouse and techno, containing tunes like a techy remix of Tim Deluxe - "It Just Won't Do" and the DJ Montana Edit of Tiësto's "Traffic". Some tight mixing and a good selection of tunes made this a very nice set. At 23:00 Thomas Siahaya got behind the wheels of steel. He played a mixture of hardtrance and techtrance, with banging tunes like: E-Craig - Smoke, Gouryella - Ligaya (Yoji Biomehanika Remix), E-Craig - Somebody's Watching My Set and Paul Mendez - 2nd Skin (Geert Huinink Remix). This really got the crowd up and dancing, being the perfect guide to lead us to the main act of the night, Marcel Woods. At exactly 0:00 he came up the stage and directly went off with a blast by throwing in Marco V. - Echnalava. Superb tune to build up a hardish set, and that's what he did for sure! Megatunes like Walt - Bring The Pain (Marcel Woods Remix), Kay D Smith & Marc Tall - Praiseworthy Tunes, Marcel Woods - Time's Running Out, Jowan - Front Loaded, Marco V. vs. Jens - Loops & Tings Relooped, John Remedy - Ventricle and loads more hardish stuff, all in all a really awesome set. The crowd clapped their hands during the breaks, Woods had a big smile on his face and the crowd was really going crazy! After some 2 hours of mazziv fun with Marcel Woods he got a huge applause from the crowd, it was a shame he couldn't go on longer. Ronnie D and Thomas Siahaya picked up the needles for one more hour of banging, with classic tunes like a hard remix of Faithless - Insomnia. We even got free ice-creams to lose some of the heat generated during the Marcel Woods set. At about 04:00 the last tune was played, being the end of the first edition of Mazziv.
Conclusion Let me sum up: + The Sets + The ambiance; friendly people, no fights +/- The sound; I think it could have used a tad more bass, but loud enough nonetheless +/- The lights; could have used a bit more variation for maximum ambiance - Security didn't let me take in my cam
As you can see the +'s overrule the -'s by far, concluding in a very nice party for this first edition of Mazziv. Certainly looking forward to the next one!
