'Spiral' by Robert Nickson is the fifteenth outing for ASOT. As we have come to expect from ASOT, we are graced with 3 quality mixes of this great piece of trance...
Robert Nickson, one half of Master & Nickson, was recently responsible for a nice remix of the mind blowing 'Kallocain' by Endre. Now he is responsible for producing his own track, 'Spiral'. Being signed on to ASOT, it can only mean one thing - trance of the highest calibre. On remix duties are up and coming trance producer MK-S and Alucard.
:: Robert Nickson - Spiral :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT015
A1: Original Mix The Original Mix begins with a very snappy and defined beat which is accompanied by a nice balance of percussion. The bassline is introduced after not very long - it is a kind of constant and droning bass, playing a higher bass note than you'd normally hear. As the track progresses, a very sfx sounding synth loops a very simple repetitive melody while a soft and gentle trancey synth playing a three note melody slowly fades in from the background and blends with the sound around it. Another synth is added - this time a higher, constant note playing above everything else. This leads into the breakdown, where the two synths work together and the constant note develops and becomes its own melody, playing a progression of dreamy notes. The track drops back in and the two synths work together playing their separate melodies to form a wonderful, relaxing and uplifting sound - one that will bring a warm smile to your face. There is a short rest period where the synths and bass subside, only to lead up to a kick roll which brings in the final main section with more of the wonderful synth melodies. After a few minutes, the track quickly winds down to a close.
B1: MK-S Remix The MK-S Remix begins with a slightly softer kick than the original. A short break comes around very quickly and instantly introduces the bassline, which is deeper with a rougher edge to it, and some quiet soft synths playing ambiently in the background. Again the synths sound great - you have a constant note playing smoothly in the depths of the track, while another synth plays a brisk but gentle sounding melody over the top. The breakdown is used again to instroduce the main melody, played this time by a reverberated extremely trancey synth with a slightly coarser and so harder trance edge to it. When the track drops, it feels more upbeat than the original, with the more prominent synth playing the melody, backed by the stronger sounding bass. The one main section is all you get with this remix, as from here the track slowly but surely plays out to a close.
B2: Alucard's Star Ocean Mix As soon as you hear the first beats of Alucard's Star Ocean Mix, you can tell its a much calmer and chilled out piece of trance. The beat is strong and steady, accompanied by a kind of bobbing and bubbly bassline. This increases in depth after a minute or so, and it quietly growls away nicely in the background. Some synths are soon added, playing some really dreamy sounding notes, enveloping the entire track into a gorgeous echoey volume of synth. There is a breakdown which initially focuses on the synth playing its reverbed notes, but gives way to near silence broken only by some sfx playing ambiently. A slight build of ambience is the cue for the beat and bass to come back in. At this point, you realise just how much strength is in this bassline - its very deep and strong but not overpowering. The synths are brought back in and play their excellent melodies together to create a fantastically chilled out trance track. There is one more shorter breakdown which features more ambience and then drops you back into the final main section before it gently eases towards the end of the track.
Conclusion:
'Spiral' is a wonderful piece of trance! Yet another great track from the untarnished ASOT label. The other two mixes are also equally as good as the original. The MK-S Remix has a more upbeat feel when compared to the Original's relaxing yet uplifting sound. Alucard's Star Ocean Mix is a beautiful track to play - it has a wonderfully chilled feeling to it but at the same time keeps with the brilliant trance sound of 'Spiral' to make it a very unique mix indeed. Excellent stuff!
