Koma and Bones released "Shutterspeed" last year to great critical acclaim. Now they decided to throw in a remix and bring in BLIM to remix the other side. What is so great about it? Read On to find Out!
Koma and Bones – Take Me Back feat. Robert Owens (RENN083)
Koma and Bones is made up of Andy Duckmartin, Chris Kirkwright and Jude Sebastion and late last year, they released “Shutterspeed”, their album to great acclaim. They used what many in the breakbeat world are using these days, which is 80’s singers (just like the Plump DJ’s with Gary Numan). The trio decided to draft in, quite possibly the greatest house singer of all time in Robert Owens. He has been known for some of the greatest house songs of all time (i.e Frankie Knuckles – Tears, Robert Owens - I’ll be your friend, Photek’s Mine To Give and many others). He is always a great choice to be used as a vocalist because he adds so much emotion to tracks. It was the highlight of Koma and Bones’s set at the Two Tribes Festival in Australia.
Koma and Bones – Take Me Back feat. Robert Owens (RENN083)
A1 – Koma and Bones Remix B1 – B.L.I.M Remix
A1 – Koma and Bones Remix
This begins with some drums then the vocal kicks in with this bass heavy beat. The vocal goes “Take Me Back to the day, where my heart was new, every little thought I had began with you”. This is all backed by some heavy breakbeats and some EQ effects. This moves into the “You were one” (repeated) then into “You + Me = One”. It reverts back to “Take Me Back” with such hard edged beats and nasty bass riffs backing it. This would work extremely well on a large system. The great part of this song is that the vocal complements the backing beats and the riffs. It goes very well together and I think the fact that Robert Owens sings the vocal, adds to the track. Koma and Bones have used Robert Owens’s Vocal to great effect here and have made a stomper of a remix. Top marks to them
B1 – B.L.I.M Remix
So for the 2nd mix on this release, they decided to draft in the always bass heavy B.L.I.M (aka Gervase Cooke). This remix has been snapped up by Uberzone for his forthcoming Y4K compilation to be released on Distinctive Records. B.L.I.M always drafts in a very bass heavy remix, when he is given the remixing duties. This begins with drums and snares and the usual B.L.I.M bass heavy riffs starting in. The vocals are in the background and they are filtered in some way and you hear “You + Me” and “Take Me Back” but they don’t use the complete vocal as the Koma and Bones Remix did. This remix is more funky, has more groove and is more bass heavy in parts than the Koma and Bones Remix. The vocal that Robert Owens sings is good and it is nice to have a mix, where they use the vocal and one where they don’t use the complete vocal. It gives you variety and gives you choice, depending on if you like the vocal or not. The song continues to build and build with the filtered vocals and the heavy bass till the very end. The B.L.I.M mix is the better of the two but I just might be biased because I like heavy bass in breakbeat tunes.
Conclusion:
Koma and Bones remix one of the better tunes from “Shutterspeed” and get B.L.I.M to add the second remix. This is a solid release from TCR and you will like this because it has great vocals, great breaks and heavy bass. They also give you some choice here because the Koma and Bones remix takes full advantage of the original vocal and the B.L.I.M uses parts of it and turns in a more dub type remix. Both are great remixes and both will work very well on a club system. They were both made for the club, you can tell but you will enjoy this at home as well. A solid release that picks up where the last TCR release left off and as usual TCR turns out the quality breakbeat release
