George Hales is undoubtedly one of the hottest prospects around, and his debut release comes via Dutch Label Somatic Sense!
Original Mix
George starts off with a kick & a soft sub-melody, which soon adds some cool percussion and a bassline to it, along with some softish acid stabs. Evolving Further, we begin to wander towards the melody. This joins us delicately, like the icing on top of a cake, sweet & soft. A short drumroll takes us into the beginning of the most epic part, with lush strings and a glass like piano, the kind that you wouldn't dare touch if it was actually glass for fear of it breaking. This moves down into a progression of notes in the main melody, uplifting and clever in the way it's been done. As the beat returns, we continue on, and the note changes mean that you don't get bored of the melody, even though it is essentially very simple. In general, this is 8 minutes of uplifting bliss, and very worthy of being Tune of the week here for this coming week!
St John vs Locust Mix
Starting off more percussive than the original mix, a range of hats are used to guide us forwards. The bassline here doesn't join us until after 1 minute, and is probably a tad deeper than the original mix, with the hi-hats and clap more prominent on this side. After 2 minutes or so, the melody begins to eminate, quickly bringing us down and filtering out for the main section to be upon us, incorporating a soft breakbeat. With a pad shimmering in the background, seemingly moving in & out like waves of the sea, the main melody then comes in, more of a saw lead than the beautiful piano on the other side, and whilst this is good quality, I can't help but wish that delicacy was upon us here too. This remix however is sure to be played by many people, as is the original. Probably a tiny bit more laid back, yet still uplifting, I'd love to see the reaction if played at a festival on a very hot day, with the sun helping to warm the tune up even more.
Conclusion:
An excellent first release for George, it's surprising he hasn't got remix offers coming out of his ears already, but after this quality release, hopefully that will happen! The remix is also a fine piece of music, however the amazing piano on the original sways me to rating that the stronger side. A fine release for Somatic Sense again however.
