Acen has been around the music scene for a good 15 years and when TCR decided to ask him to create a track for the 2nd release for their 10th anniversary celebrations, you knew something good was to come out of it. How so? Read on to find out!
Acen is a household name for some but for others he is a new name. Acen is Acen Razvi who was a part of the early hardcore releases in the early 1990’s and he was one of the people who pushed hardcore during that time frame. His most famous work was “A Trip To The Moon”, which was released in the early 90’s. Well it is the year 2004 now and Thursday Club Recordings is celebrating their tenth year in business and this is the second release in their 10 inch vinyl series. There is also a video for this song that was directed by Acen himself, which was his debut and this can be seen at CLICK HERE
Acen – Dirty Raver (Original/Rennie Pilgrem Mix) (RENNTEN3085)
A1.Original Mix B1.Rennie Pilgrem’s Industrial Disco Mix
A1. Original Mix
We start with heavy beats and drums for a short while then a groovy bassline enters and the bassline beats double in places, this is on purpose and it sounds completely normal. A female vocal that sounds robotic enters saying “Hey Dirty Raver”. You get this synth that enters, that reminds me of Flat Beat in some respects. We then hear the vocal again “Hey Dirty Raver, You Nasty Raver” backed by this groovy bassline. The vocal goes away and you hear the bassline + the effects for a while then another vocal sample enters, which is the same voice as the first sample saying “Rave your ass”. Everything works well together and the song is just a joy to listen to. A vocal enters, a little while later saying “Switch” and then the song completely changes gears to something totally unexpected and different and then about twelve seconds later, it says “Switch Back” and it returns to the usual bassline and effects.
The beats continues for some time then the “Dirty Raver” vocal comes back in and shortly after, another switch happens and it reverts to the same style as the first switch breakdown but this time about ten seconds into it; a weird sample is added and it is followed by “Rave your ass”. About ten seconds after that vocal, it switches back to the normal bassline, just like before. At this point in the track, you realize how addictive the hook is and how much you like it. The song keeps the same pace for a good half minute and then another vocal enters “Hands in Air, All Ravers”, you get the sense that Acen has not left out his past influences on this tune. Suddenly without warning, the backing beat changes to something a little harder this time. This continues for a while then the track changes to the switch mode but no vocal saying “Switch” that happened like the first two times and the track breaks down to a more simple old skool beat. We are treated to this for some time then the beat becomes more pulsating and the bass increases, which is always a good thing. The song goes along like this till near the end when the beats drop out and it becomes just a single beat, the effects are gone and you sense this is the end. The song then fades into silence.
B1.Rennie Pilgrem’s Industrial Disco Mix
Rennie Pilgrem does the second mix on this release and he puts the usual unique Rennie Pilgrem spin on things. We start with the vocal of “Dirty Raver..ver…ver” with single beats but a more disco style breaks bassline. A “Woah” sample is then thrown in for fun, you can tell this is a great mix and we are less than a minute into this song. The song goes along at this pace and just instrumental for a while then the same beat comes in as the original mix but it is not as hard and it has a more disco-house feel. About a minute into this song, the “Dirty Raver” vocal comes in but the bassline seems to add more funk after the vocal. Some cymbals are thrown in for good measure and you are now bobbing your head to the beat because it is really addictive. Another sample comes in saying “Touch Me, Feel Me” and this is used a few times in this song.
Some weird noises then enter and then after a good twenty seconds, the track changes pace to more disco influenced breakbeat, which I’ve never heard before but I like it. A guitar helps drive this song for a while, still with the same harsh bassline and the effects. It goes like this for what seems like a long while, when actually it is probably just sixty seconds and it changes pace again and we revert to old skool beats and the “Woah” comes back in. A few seconds later, the famous chorus of “Dirty Raver” appears but the beat that has been driving it, becomes meaner. The song stays like this for a decent amount of time and then reverts back to the original beat that it started with. It continues like this till the very end of the track.
Conclusion:
TCR does it again with another solid release, it seems like a cliché but they really work hard on their releases and they try to give you something different for every release. Acen starts well with the original mix and I’ve only ever heard his “A trip to the moon”, so I was shocked when I heard this. The original mix is a solid track that builds then changes then builds then changes, always keeping you in suspense. Rennie Pilgrem’s Industrial Disco Mix is the best mix of the two, he adds this addictive element with the disco influenced breaks and he adds different samples to make his mix stand out. The bassline is very harsh at times and a joy to listen to. Solid mixes and it is what you expect from TCR.
