More remixes of Blank & Jones' newly released single are landing. There are two remix vinyls, and one brings with it a rather nice little surprise...
Blank & Jones' 'Mind Of The Wonderful', featuring the vocal talent of Elles De Graaf, is being remixed vigorously at the moment. The two initial mixes, the Mark Norman Mix and the Mark Norman Vocal Mix were reviewed here. Now more remixes have arrived - on the first vinyl, the two remixes by Mark Norman are joined by a remix from Re-Locate and on the second vinyl, you have remixes by Hiver & hammer and Martin Roth. Also included on the second vinyl is a remix of Blank & Jones' 'Stars Shine Bright', done by none other than Sam Sharp!

B2: Re-Locate Remix The Re-Locate Remix begins with a hefty beat accompanied by a healthy serving of percussion. The percussion is added in layers until a very defined and rhythmic bassline is added with a rush of sfx. Quickly, the beat and percussion gives way for the vocal to begin. This track focuses heavily on the vocals, and they begin very clearly and capture your attention. They are solidly backed by the strong beat and filling bass. As the song progresses, you hear a build up of stabbing synths playing a one note-based rhythm in the background. This becomes more prominent in the breakdown that follows and it transforms into a chord progression as the emotional sounding vocals ring out. The track drops back in powerfully and alongside the vocals, beat and bass, the new synth driven chord progression plays out and sounds great - very crisp and defined, adding excellent body to the sound. This is wonderfully crafted and really makes this remix stand out from the crowd.
This first vinyl also comes in the form of a fabulously sexy looking limited edition dark grey vinyl with splashes of black!
Vinyl 2 A1: Hiver & Hammer Remix This remix utilises a slightly lesser beat and a housey style of percussion to start. This is dropped quite soon for something more conventional, while at the same time a lightly undulating bassline is brought in. The percussion is added layer by layer, as is a sprinkling of synths. All this is used to create a progressive build towards the long breakdown section. There are a few vocal samples here, but it is mainly ambient synth based. This leads into a driving, proggy section of the track, lead by a rhythmic stabbing synth and deep bass. This section is broken by a little vocal interlude, and the track returns to how we heard it at the beginning, and makes it way to a close.
A2: Martin Roth Remix The remix by Martin Roth has a punchier beat and crisper percussion. It also plays a bit faster than the other mixes. After a short build up of drums and percussion, the main body is introduced. It consists of the same punchy beat and percussion, along with an acid sounding bassline which really pushes the sound of this track, rather positively I hasten to add, in the psy-trance direction. The middle of the track sees the vocals sung through, and this allows a build up of synth, playing a nice melody in the background along with the vocals. During that build up, there is a breakdown and when the track drops, the synth takes over and plays out this new melody. It can sound a little overpowering at times, though. There is a short rest section next which features that nice acidic bassline. Another main section of strong synth follows and takes the track to its close.
B1: Stars Shine Bright (Sam Sharp Remix) Now heres the nice surprise I mentioned earlier! The original of this track featured in Blank & Jones' album, 'Monument', reviewed here. Sam Sharp has stepped in to remix 'Stars Shine Bright'. This remix follows in Sam Sharp's renowned hard, dark and driving style of trance, backed up eventually with the trademark big stabbing synths. There is good all round usage of sfx to fill out the track and help polish it off. Also, the bassline and accompanying percussion remind me of Marco V's driving style of hard/tech trance. The big synths are introduced wonderfully. They start playing short, filtered and reverbed groups of notes during a quiet and ambient breakdown. They become more frequent and then build up and are filtered out only to power back in when the track drops - strong bass, big big driving trance synths playing in that awesome stabbing style. What more could you ask for?
There is also a two colour (light grey with splashes of dark grey) limited edition of vinyl number two aswell!
Conclusion:
This is a nice collection of remixes of 'Mind Of The Wonderful', topped off by the addition of Sam Sharp's remix of 'Stars Shine Bright'. The Re-Locate Remix is a very, very strong piece, which is big on the vocals and also big on the synth driven melody. The Hiver & Hammer Remix goes for a more progressive style while the Martin Roth Remix is a much more energetic mix with a great psy-trance feel and sound, let down slightly by the sometimes overpowering synth. The 'Stars Shine Bright' remix though, is an absolutely cracking piece of hard trance.
