What is a classic? A classic is something timeless and in the case of music, a song that, no matter how old, sounds good. Southern Sun, for me, sort of fall under this category with Classic Vocals, if not a great song. So does this Bootleg (which has been played by the Judge and vote Mixmag number 1)fix those problems......I bet the suspense is killing you....
Southern Sun- Fat Kid White Isle Remix 137Bpm
This song was a huge hit back in 2002, with Remixes from the likes of Tiesto and Gabriel & Dresden but again for me it was a disappointing song with really well done and recognisable vocals. The amount of times I've been asked the name of the song from just those vocals.....I've lost count. It always left me thinking there is surely more to those wonderful vocals than the current crop of mixes?(The original still being the best of them for me) I got this song on promo press about a month ago and I've been playing it, trying to decide what to make of it! My Reaction is mixed. Some good some bad. The track opens with a super piece of synth and guitar play, into a straight kick and clap. A over delayed bass trips it's way in on the track, changing in key every 4 bars. Which sound really smart. Then more layers of synth are added to create a sound of depth and atmosphere of a Armada/State of Trance style production. It's simple looped build stuff, but after a dodgy start the track gets going. After 2 minutes, the loops break down to bass and kick only, adding the vocals. Oh Dear.....it's gone potty. Here again is where it goes abit wrong. The vocal timing doesn't match and sounds misplaced. A Ferry Corsten style clap is added and the layering synth readded. (Which are brilliant, giving the track an insertion of warmth!) Strengthen by synth chords to the break. Here the warm synths take back seat to a awesome guitar solo, which only adds to the warmth. Giving the song a real uplifting, summer type feel and more importantly, something the original (mix and remixes) lacked. Those 'classic' vocals I mentioned come back in with a real sense of emotion, blending perfectly with the guitar, synthlayers and the now added Bass line. The chords cut back in with zero snare and the song takes flight. The guitar is added after 30 seconds or so, making it sound very Envio in style. The break down and added vocals towards the beginning of the second break make this a real beauty, ending as a full on vocal trancer with guitar overtones.
Conclusion:
The overall effect of this one sided bootleg is a warm, sunny summer trance remake in a very dutch style. But it's a let down by some shoddy build and ending sequences, as well as that vocal section from hell, that hampers the whole production. Pity really.
