© Trance Revolution RecordsYou start a label and you have great success with the first release, you are a duo of deejays looking to make a name for yourself. Well that is the case with Trance Revolution Records and i:Vibes sat down to talk with them. What's next for the duo?

Trance Revolution Recordings was started in October 2003 by Two Deejays (DJ Genix aka Damion Houchen and Andy Bagguley). They started the label to be able to release music that they liked. The first release was Havannah – Havannah, which got massive support from top flight deejays and was a success in terms of sales. They have no rested on that and admired that, they are hard at work with the new TRR 002 called Genix & Andy Bagguley present Oracle - Aries (Original & Shane 54 Refill) and they are working on TR003. Well their unique approach interested us at i:Vibes, so we sat down with Damion and Andy for a chat and this is what they said.

i:Vibes: What made you decide to start a label?

A: Genix: Well we mainly started the record label to promote our own music and us as artists. We can also give the chance for new artists to get a record released. The first release was Havannah – Havannah, which was a great debut record for us as a label. We had support from all the major DJ’s and radio shows and it really kick started TRR.

A: Andy: As Genix mentions, we initially started the label for our own productions but we soon realized there was masses of unsigned talent out there so we decided to step it up a gear and sign more tunes. Havannah was huge and gave us just the start we needed.

i:Vibes: Were you apprehensive about starting a label or did you just jump right into it?

A: Genix: Well we originally was going to get just one record released. But then we thought why don’t we set up a label! We knew that many labels seemed to be dropping by the day but that did not phase us really. We just wanted to do it for the music and jumped right into it!

A: Andy: Times are difficult for vinyl sales at the minute so it was a tough decision to start a label but hopefully we can put something back into the industry now and help build things back up! And yes…we did jump right in but fortunately we knew many people who helped us out loads since we started!!

i:Vibes: So why did you name it Trance Revolution Recordings?

A: Genix: Andy came up with the name for this one!

A: Andy: Err.. thanks Damo!! ;) I don’t know really.. I wanted something that related to Trance and I just thought about different phrases and something that could be shortened (TRR) if required! This popped into my head when I was driving home one day so I called Genix and he loved it!!

i:Vibes: What is the goal behind it?

A: Genix: Our main goals for the label is to release records, promote ourselves as artists, new talent and to make money. And of course to enjoy it!

A: Andy: Pretty much as Genix says. Hopefully this label will firmly establish us as serious artists in the music world.

i:Vibes: What does success mean to you?

A: Genix: Success means everything. It is the potential of it that keeps me motivated. For a new label we have already had great success, we are already recognized as a top label that brings quality music. We have many emails from people saying that they really enjoy what we are doing with the label, which is nice!

A: Andy: As Genix says but also success to me means being respected and admired for what you do. We are working very hard to reach these goals and things seem to be working out pretty well so far.

i:Vibes: Did you ever think that it you would be pushing unknown talent? Do you feel that the music industry is not doing enough for young talent?

A: Genix: I think the industry could do a little more for new talent. I think that if the amount of new talent that comes through is the right amount it keeps people interested and it is refreshing. For example I think DJ’s should be given more of a chance on the big stage. A few days ago I saw an old line-up in a magazine from a few years ago and it was the same as line-ups now! I never thought I would be helping new talent to come through. I still feel that I am a fairly unknown artist, I hope the record label will help people reach their goals.

A: Andy: As an up’n’coming DJ, I know how difficult it is to get into this business. Hopefully this label will help us do better as well as introducing fresh ideas with music. The good thing with music is that it doesn’t really matter who you are; if you make a good tune, people will play and buy it!!

i:Vibes: So do you view this as an outlet for your productions or more of just a chance to release music that you love or push unknown talent or all three?

A: Genix: I would have to say all three. I feel that trance has fallen down a bit over the past few years and has gone more underground. I am not a big name to push it right back up there but I will do all I can to help it. I want the label to push my own music as well as other artists and get it recognized amongst the music lovers.

A: Andy: Definitely all 3 in my opinion. We don’t sign anything to TRR without both of us being 100% behind it. I don’t really care if it’s a big name or not; if its good enough, we’ll have it!!

i:Vibes: How well was the first TRR release received?

A: Genix: We couldn’t have asked for a better start with the label. It was the perfect record to get us going. It was a huge hit with support from al the big DJ’s and radio shows! We start as we mean to go on : )

A: Andy: Yeah as Genix says, Havannah was a HUGE record for TRR with support from Armin, Tiesto, Ferry and many more!! It gave our label instant credibility among the DJ’s.

i:Vibes: Do you feel you could have done anything better in regards to the first release?

A: Genix: I feel you can always improve something…..so I think there could have been ways in which the release could have been made more successful. We are a new label and learning all the time… Some of our pressings seemed to have been not of high quality… we have now changed our pressing plant and the people who cut & master. We now have the best quality vinyl I feel. So we have improved there.. I think the first release really sold itself as it was a fantastic piece of music..

A: Andy: I agree that in a business like this, there is always room for improvement. We did have a few teething problems with TRR001 but we have sorted them out for TRR002. We will always take onboard any advice or comments from people whether they’re good or bad.

i:Vibes: You both claim you were both involved in the music industry before you started the label? In what regards? Do you feel that you are better equipped to running a label because of your knowledge?

A: Genix: Well we are both active DJ’s. I worked in a record shop for a while and I have had a few releases of my own so you just get to know the music scene. I saw what records sell the most from working in the shop and which sound is most popular. I feel that this has helped me with the record label.

A: Andy: I have been Djing for over 5 years and I now know a lot of influential people in the music business as friends. So yes, I definitely think this gave us a massive advantage to get the label going and gain support.

i:Vibes: Have both of your deejay careers gone in different directions as a result of TRR? Have they improved or not improved?

A: Genix: Well I think people have taken a little more notice of me now which is good. But nothing drastic… I hope that the label will help push my name a little more.

A: Andy: Well my Djing has been building up for some time now and I really hope that this label gives us both a step up the ladder. We have something to offer people now in that we produce music and run a label. I find that people take us more seriously now as artists and are more prepared to listen, and work with us.

i:Vibes: What’s the next release for TRR?

A: Genix: Well we have our own track ‘Oracle – Aries’ which is out now…it also has a great remix from Shane 54. Then we are releasing a track by Auriane, which is a collaboration between Ferrucio Trebaldi and Perry O’Neil (Locust), I have also remixed this track. Also there is work from Whirlpool (Filo & Peri) & Octagen, Kyamoto and Thrillseekers forthcoming. So the future looks bright!

i:Vibes: Where do you guys envision TRR in 5 years from now?

A: Genix: Well I would like TRR and myself to be well established in the industry. I want to bring people music and be recognized for doing it. Also I hope I become a big name DJ as well as producer. These are my ambitions and goals… I will achieve them. I am only 20 and have a big future in front of me if I work hard enough and I am working very hard at the minute!

A: Andy: As Genix points out, we really want TRR to be a top worldwide known label within this time. But also, personally I’d like to take the label to another level eventually and cover more aspects in music, ie club nights, tours, albums etc. Make it more of a Music Company instead of just a record label. Time will tell if we can make this happen, but we are both very motivated people so there is no reason why it can’t.

i:Vibes: Where do each of your want to be in 5 years, deejaying and production and label wise?

A: Genix: As mentioned above I want to be a big artist in the industry…. These are my dreams and I feel I can achieve them if I work hard enough.

A: Andy: Hmm.. difficult question to put into words. I have a lot going on at the minute and everyday things are looking better and better for me as a DJ, an artist and as a label owner. 5 years is a long time to predict for but I hope I’ll be a front runner of the Trance scene!

i:Vibes: Anything Else that you would like to add?

A: Genix: I would personally like to thank everyone who has helped support the label and releases so far. It has a major factor in the success of the label and I appreciate everyone’s help. At the end of the day its all about music and enjoyment! I hope that you all enjoy our work!!

Thanks for now… Genix

A: Andy: Yeah big thanks to all the people who have helped us get this label going. And thanks to all the DJ’s who will hopefully continue to appreciate and support our music.

Andy

We would like to thank Genix and Andy for taking time to chat with us. We wish them the best in the future and look for their most recent release TR002 in record shops soon.
