What happens when you mix up one of the biggest labels, an ex-steelworks, a veritable banquet of hard as nails DJs, an audio visual feast of mammoth expense and oh, around about 5,000 mental clubbers? A mission. A Magna Mission...
Saturday the 1st Of May saw Tidy take control of the Magna Centre and open its massive gates to 5,000 clubbers, all hell bent on having one crazy Magna Mission to Planet Tidy. It was one mad mission, I can tell you that.
This time round, Magna sported the main Tidy arena: Yoji Biomehanika, Eddie Halliwell, Lisa Lashes, Tidy Boys, Andy Farley, BK, Amber D and the Tidy Boys; the Face Of Steel zone: Guy McAffer (Live), Nick Sentience (Live), Anne Savage, Paul Glazby, Mark EG, Tara Reynolds and Paul Maddox; the Alpha Zone (Lunar Pod 1): a hard trance arena hosted by Lee Haslam, who is joined by Matt Hardwick, Guyver, Andi Durrant and Paul Kershaw; Lunar Pod 2: featuring funky beats from The Trophy Twins, Oliver Lang, Hatty Lovehearts and Onephatbillie; and finally the Earths Core: the sound of hardcore brought to you by Brisk, Scott Brown, Stu Allan, Ham Dougal, DJ Unknown, Asa, Dodgee and MCs Wotsee, Storm and Whizkid.
Phew.
Such choice, so many DJs and only a mere 9 hours to check it all out - we had our work cut out!
This was my first time at Magna and to say that the venue was breathtaking is just a complete understatement. The place is _HUGE_. Seriously. Its wide, its long and you have a hard time figuring out how far up exactly the roof of the place actually is. Some parts are so immense that when you walk out of the arenas, it feels as though you are outside, yet you are actually still inside. Thats something that takes a bit of getting used to!
Anyway, after about an hour the initial shock of the place was beginning to be bearable, so we began visiting the arenas. The funky bubble acted as a great pitstop for much needed moments to chill and re-group. The constant funky grooves throughout the night, while not always pulling massive crowds, were generally appreciated by all. The hardcore experience in the Earths Core zone was crazy - the arena was literally a pit dug into the earth, designed to contain all the hardcore fanatics. It was the place to be if you like it hard as the earth itself and faster than something, er, really really fast. The Face Of Steel Zone wasn't that big in terms of ground coverage, but it was set beneath an imposing array of 11 stories of ironworks and girders. The music here was comparable to the main tidy arena, but had an emphasis on the harder and dirtier tunes. We spent most of our time, however, in the main Planet Tidy arena. With a capacity of 3,000, this place was understandibly massive - it stretched back a very long way, with big tidy logos and space invader aliens hanging from above and a whole host of lights and 5 awesome lasers beaming from the centre stage, enveloping the entire arena.
The best sets came from The Tidy Boys, who played a nice mix of old and new; Eddie Halliwell, who played a variety of old, new, hard and downright dirty tracks and Andy Farley, who drove the night to a close with a dark, dirty and driving set of dirty hard house.
Overall, it was an absolutely cracking night and anyone who likes the harder music needs to get themselves to Magna if they haven't been before. Its something you just need to experience first hand, without question. An awesome, awesome night!
This was just the entrance hall - the rest was bigger!
Plenty of room for plenty of people!
The visuals were amazing...
