The latest piece of action on the 2Play label is a big fat slice of tech trance from Mac Zimms. It can already be found shaking dancefloors conducted by the likes of Armin van Buuren, Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell and Johan Gielen to name a few! Check it out...
Mac Zimms has a lot of work under his belt. He is behind numerous productions, remixes and aliases as well as performing behind the decks for well over 15 years. His latest piece, called 'I Feel' is now here and it seems like its proving to be quite popular. This one comes in two subtly different flavours, entitled 1.1 Mix and 1.2 Mix and will be released on 24/05/2004.
:: Mac Zimms - I Feel :: 2Play :: 2PLAY005
1) Mix 1.1 The first mix of 'I Feel' begins with a restrained beat and simple percussion to back it up. This is quickly beefed up as a fuller and more bassy sound is faded in, swiftly followed again by a much, much heftier beat and a sfx strike every 4 beats off the beat which reminds me very much of a similar sound in Tiesto's Flight 643. The track continues with this minimal, chunky and powerful sound for a little while, using variations in percussion and creative sfx in the background to keep things lively and interesting. A few more minutes down the line, there is a break section where the beat subsides and an electronic sounding synth with a slight housey style edge to it begins to play a stabbing kind of hook over and over, adding another layer to the track. There is another break later on in the track, which is used to build back up to this synth and play the track out to an end.
2) Mix 1.2 The 1.2 Mix is fairly similar to the 1.1 Mix. There are a few defining differences however. Firstly, this mix is shorter. Secondly, the Flight 643 style sfx has a rougher sound to it - similar to what happens when you use an 'overdrive' switch on a standard guitar amp to get that slightly rough and distorting sound. Thirdly, the main synth is toned down and isn't as penetrating. Lastly, the bass resonates more - there is a distinct constant rumble in the background, which adds a touch more drive and solidarity to the overall feel of the track. Again, the 1.2 Mix contains layering of percussion and sfx and two breaks with the main hook build up to mix things up a little, as is in the 1.1 Mix.
Conclusion:
I like this track quite a lot because of its chunky solid strength. It's a cross between techno and tech-trance, if there can be such a thing - not an overly fearsome techno onslaught nor a continous and fast paced stream of dark synthy beats and leads. Just something rather good which fuels itself and drives you onward, wanting more of that heavy bass and solid beat.
