Apple are splitting their companies up, one for their computers and the other for the iPod, they say they will be able to co-ordinate resources for the iPod better this way...
Up to now there has only been one division at Apple responsible for all hardware both for the Macintosh systems and the iPod series portable music players introduced over two and a half years ago. The company has now confirmed that a separate department has been set up for iPod so that resources can be coordinated better for the product. The department is managed by Jon Rubinstein, Vice President for Hardware Engineering at Apple and previously responsible for the whole hardware division. The Macintosh department is run by Tim Cook, Executive Vice President Worldwide Sales and Operations.
This new department dedicated to management and further development of the music player is another clear indication of the importance that the iPod now has at Apple the launch of the online iTunes Music Store gave iPod business a considerable boost. Apple managed to deliver an impressive 807,000 iPods in the second quarter of the current business year alone this figure was 80,000 in the same period last year. As a comparison: Apple delivered 749,000 Power Macs, iBooks and Power Books in the second quarter of 2004 compared with 711,000 in the same period of 2003.
Some observers are already speculating that the new division could well be the start signal for the development and marketing of other digital gadgets along the same lines as the iPod. Also rumours that Apple plans to develop its own PDA have resurfaced repeatedly such a device has, however, not yet been seen anywhere since the company failed with the Newton that is now considered to be pioneering.
