J.D.S launched the mighty "Blackout" on TCR Recordings last year and the song was a monster but now comes the follow up to that release and did J.D.S live up to the expectations or did they let us down?
J.D.S – Purple Funky Monkey/Daylight (TCR)
J.D.S (Darren Pearce and Julian Napolitano) had great success with their TCR Release called Blackout. It was played all over radio, almost to the point of being overplaying but it was stupidly massive but would J.D.S sit around and admire the success of one record? No, they decided to make another stupidly massive record and this is it. You had many big name deejays playing “Purple Funky Monkey” and here is what a few of them said; Tayo said “So big a tune I laughed when I first heard it, will tear up the dancefloors all summer”. Meat Katie declared it to be the biggest ever tune on TCR and Soul of Man said “It’s a massive tune with bassline”. Well TCR have done it again, they have found another blinder of a release.
J.D.S – Purple Funky Monkey/Daylight (TCR) (RENN3086)
A1 – J.D.S vs. Mihel – Purple Funky Monkey B1 – J.D.S – Daylight
A1 – J.D.S vs. Mihel – Purple Funky Monkey
This is the bigger of the two tracks and the one that you will be hearing all summer. It starts with a normal breakbeat line but then quickly after, the bassline from hell comes in, easiest way to describe it would be the dirtiest and funkiest driving bassline ever. Only thing that comes close to making my stomach turn because of the dirtiness would be Boris Dlugosh’s Keep Pushin On, think of that bassline but in more of a breakbeat way. We then have sound effects entering, which reminds me of swoosh noises. This deep male voice comes in saying “Get down to the purple funky monkey” with the bassline from hell driving it. By now, you are already dancing to this because it contains what few records out today have, an infectious groove. I can see why all the deejays are talking about how much damage this record will do on the dancefloor, I can see the mayhem that will happen, the bassline is so good and the chorus of the “Purple Funky Monkey”, I think some people will invent a dance to go along with it. The voice comes back in saying “Get Down” then “Sex”, which is weird but you don’t care because the funky bassline is driving it. The voice then says “When you like to get down” and you hear some sound effects that remind you of wind noises. The voice comes back about ten seconds later saying “Do you like have sex or maybe you like to get down to the purple funky monkey”, at this point, you are begging the voice “Where can I get down?”. The bassline continues to drive this beast of a tune and then it nears the end by repeating “Purple Funky Monkey”. This song you will hear in the clubs, all over the world, this year, watch out.
B1 – J.D.S – Daylight
J.D.S try to follow up the amazing A side but the B side is not as great as the first side but it is hard to try to emulate a beast of a tune. Daylight is less funky in terms of the bassline, it uses lots of sound effects, layer upon layer to gain the listener’s attention. I did say that this tune is not as great as the first one but make no mistake, this side is a dancefloor destroying tune, just not to the effect as the “Purple Funky Monkey”. This song makes use of a lighter bassline but makes real use of the sound effects with really push this song. J.D.S can do no wrong at the moment, so top marks to this song.
Conclusion:
TCR produces another quality tune, seems like I have been saying it, a lot this year but they really put out quality releases for the music buying public. “Purple Funky Monkey” will be one of the bigger breaks tunes, this year in Ibiza and all over the world. I hope someone creates a dance to it and in the club, you can get down to the “Purple Funky Monkey”. This release is even bigger than Blackout and that tune was a monster as well but this is even bigger and it should do well. Excellent release
