Outback make a welcome return onto Armin's A State Of Trance imprint with more of their unique sounding trance...
Outback consists of Jim Hermsen and Jop van Amelsfoort, both from Holland. They appeared on the A State Of Trance label before with 'Minds In Motion' and they remixed the incredible 'Turtle Beach' by Empirical Labs. Their latest track is called 'State Of Emergy' and it comes in the form of the Original Mix and a Draft 2 Design Remix...
:: Outback - State Of Emergy :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT019
A) Original Mix The first thing that you notice about this one, just by looking at the vinyl, is the unusual structure and pattern of breaks and changes. When you play it, the track begins with some soft notes and a quiet, muted beat. This evolves quickly into a full on beat, interspersed with little synthy parts. An explosion of sound brings in the bassline, which is thick and constant. From this point on, the track continues to grow, filling up with course sounding synths and sfx - Outback's trademark sound. The course instruments give way as the breakdown ensues and a gorgeous, moving, dual tiered melody begins to play. You have a reverbed, plucked synth playing subtle notes in the foreground, backed by a synth string sound in the background playing long smooth chords. This is further enhanced by a deep and powerful synth playing along with a deep and bassy riff. The melody is wonderful, full of soul and emotion - proper film soundtrack material i think. The track drops back in with the beat and coarse synths and the melody continues. Next, the melody is dropped and the track returns to the basic coarse synth driven section we heard at the beginning. From here, there follows another momentary break which is used to introduce a section driven by a strong sounding synth. After these two sections have passed, layers are removed slowly and the track comes to a close.
B) Draft 2 Design Remix The Draft 2 Design Remix begins with an ambient intro filled with lush pads and female choir voices. This soon erupts with the onset of a punchy beat backed by a more traditional sounding bassline. The track is slowly filled with pads, synths and little synthed-up instruments, interrupted only by a short, quite minimal section. The breakdown is introduced gently, with the melody quietly being played by some fine sounding pads and synths. The plucked synth makes another appearance, as does a few nicely placed piano bars. A snare roll brings in the main section of this excellent track - beat, bass and the powerful melody. This isn't what you could describe as an uplifting feeling, but a similar one that has you opening you arms wide, wanting to embrace the heavens. Once the melody dies down, the track comes to a conclusion fairly soon after.
Conclusion:
'State Of Emergy' is an excellent track - nice instruments, good all round production, but it is the melody that makes this track. It's one of those that reminds you nicely what trance is all about. The Original Mix utilises it sparingly though, focussing mainly on the driving, coarse synth sections - much like Outback's remix of 'Turtle Beach'. Because of this, the Draft 2 Design Remix, on the flip, comes out on top of the two, simply because it gives that great melody more of a chance to play out and be heard and enjoyed.
