This album is unlike the previous three, having been divided into two separate parts, being part one and part two. But on listening to the whole album I realized that the songs within part one & two all fuse together. The listener is then taken on a journey not realizing that the piece of music they are listening to is in actual fact separate songs. This is what I like most about the album, I originally thought that the tracks were too short and in fact yes, when they are on their own as individual tracks. However, when played in the sequence of beginning to end it works so effectively.
The introduction is necessary as it introduces the listener to the new sounds of LSK. The second track which is the first single off this album, mass destruction this is one of those tracks where you get too witness the intelligence of maxi jazz’s vocals. Many people think it’s a political statement but I like to think it has more power and meaning than that. Really you should be your own judge on this one :)
The third track titled I want more (part one) this is where the listener really gets to hear how unique and soulful his voice really is. The lyrics are very poetic and this truly this is feel good song. Especially, with the added vocals of Nina Simone. Part two has a bit more edge to it. This is where the music takes over, the tempo is increased and the driving beats get louder but it still incorporates the LSK vocals wonderfully.
Love lives on my street is the fifth track, once again LSK is on vocals. This track has a reggae feel to it where you can’t help but tap your feet to it. Once you start to get the feel of it you are thrown into bluegrass the next track. Maxi jazz opens up with the vocals; there is something very familiar about this track. The continuous guitar riff and maxi’s rhyme really does bring back some nostalgia.
Part two of this album begins with Sweep, this is an instrumental which really does break up the album and it can be seen why it has been divided into two sections. I feel this track brings the tempo up. It really is a great track as it progresses you hear the different elements being layered upon each other. Miss you less see you more, has a constant melody throughout the track. The first verses are sung by maxi jazz with the chorus being sung by LSK. This track really fuses both vocals together and they really do compliment each other.
No roots, sees the return of dido, how can there be a faithless album without the vocals of dido. It is opened by the sound of the guitar. Maxi opens with his vocals which aren’t overpowering; the song really does belong to the guitar. Dido’s voice really is inspiring and so beautiful, at times though I do feel that it doesn’t quite fit in with the riff. I feel this song will be the most likely to become the second release.
Swingers is the next piece this song really is different then anything they have done before. The middle of the song is dedicated to one fantastic guitar riff, but then it gets complex and as the guitar slowly fades out maxi jazz appears, the track slowly mellows down.
Pastoral, really has sister bliss stamped all over it. This is also one fantastic piece of music, it really shows you the endless talents of all those involved within this band. This for me is the resting point of the album; it continues to take you on a journey. As the sound of the piano recedes the guitar riff is integrated to give this piece of music a very seductive sound.
Everything will be alright tomorrow, with the reminisce of pastoral in the background LSK once again delivers a sound like no other. This track is short in comparison but the next track sure makes up for it. What about love, this is the epic track that I have been waiting for, it’s the natural progression of the music, it builds and builds and then the ever so familiar lyrics of maxi jazz appears. This really would make a good single, but it would be such a shame to see it cut up into a radio edit.
In the end, brilliantly titled as part two of the journey draws to a close. This song really does go out with a bang, at the end of it as a listener you feel satisfied. This is the track where you get too see the full potential of LSK, his voice is amazing. This track also has a dark driving beat, unlike anything faithless have done before.
Many Thanks to Jolene for the Review <3
Conclusion:
All in all, I think the tracks individually are great, but when put into context and listened to as a whole this simply is a master piece by rollo and the gang. I would recommend it to all music lovers.
