Silicon Recordings returns with a new release by the previously unknown artist John Remedy. Earlier releases on the label include well-received techtrance hammers like Jowan - 'Front Loaded' and Mike Robbins - 'Are You A Freak', all played by numerous big jocks.. Will this new release be another success?
// Artist: John Remedy // Title: Ventricle / Catharsis // Labelcode: SR 0427-5, Silicon Recordings // Releasedate: June 01, 2004
'John Remedy' is an alias for two Dutch producers, Jordy van Oostveen and Boy van Lamoen. Jordy has a residency at the well-known Dutch Matrixx DJ Cafe, and Boy is known from previous releases like 'Impetuous', 'Fertile' and 'Mutual Consent' under his Collusion guise.
A-side: Ventricle (Lamoen & Lishious Mix) This one has already gained lots of attention by the likes of Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Tiësto and Johan Gielen, to name a few. Starting off with a crispy kick and some accompanying percussion, the track builds itself up with some original background effects and more percussion. After a while a sort of heavily vocoded sample comes up, introducing us to the bassline which kicks in in a superbly fierce way. The build-up continues, now with a newly added synth which plays a repeating, darkish melody. The break commences with that on-going synth and a muted kick, just until a new, strong synth comes in which plays the beginning of the main melody. It gets filtered in and out to build up the tension, but then suddenly explodes in a fully energetic techy mainroom blaster by using a very effective downgoing chord just before the climax. The percussion and bassline fit in perfectly with the dark techy melody, creating one of the better techtrancers around at the moment. This would certainly suit during those peak-time moments in a set, causing a stir on the dancefloor which would probably lift off the roof any time. After this first climax, a new build-up towards a second climatic part appears, containing a somewhat shorter break and a faster introduction of the main synth. After this it's time for the build-off, which is somewhat long, but not bad at all 'cause it makes the track easier to mix for the DJ.
B-side: Catharsis (Original Mix) The second track on this EP starts off with a whooshy sound and a kick which reminded me a bit of earlier Marco V. productions. A muted, soft bassy sound appears in between the kicks, which gets replaced soon by a more stomping and hard bassline. A lot of percussion gets added, creating a very full vibe during this build-up. After a while, some of the elements disappear, making place for a break which introduces a very cool synth playing a repeating, but very well crafted melody, which gets built up using some muted percussion. The kick-in of the bassdrum and bassline sounds good, creating an overall techy vibe. The synth that got introduced during the break is accompanied by a faster synth which plays along with the original melody, making the track sound more and more full. All this goes on for a while, just until a second break appears in which the original synth returns to bring us one last moment of techy happiness.
Conclusion:
Jordy & Boy have brought us two immense new techtrancers, which will certainly burn loads and loads of dancefloors around the world in the coming months. 'Ventricle' has this awesome energetic atmosphere during the break and the climax, while 'Catharsis' might have been a Marco V. production if you didn't know about the artists behind it. All in all a fantastic new release on the Silicon label, don't forget to get this when you're a fan of some good techtrance!
