Hot on the heels of 'Taurine' comes another Anjunabeats release. This time its 'Guanxi' from up and coming artist Menno De Jong. This one has already been picked up by Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond and Marc West...
Menno De Jong had an early passion for music - he trained in classical piano when he was just 10 years old. This passion stemmed to electronic music and then to playing infront of people. After playing private parties, he soon made residency at a local club, where he spun for 2 years. Interest grew and grew, and Menno got the opportunity to DJ at bigger events, enabling him to play out his own beautiful progressive, trance and tech trance sounds. From there, he has made bookings alongside some of the biggest names in some of the most prestigious venues all over the world.
Menno De Jong's first release for Anjunabeats is the deeply melodic trancer 'Guanxi', which will be released on the 28th of June.

A) Original Mix The Original Mix of 'Guanxi' begins with a pretty meaty kick with some nice ambience in the background. The rather unorthodox combination is joined briefly by some bongo drums, but very soon after this a bassline, more percussion and some light synth backing are introduced. his doesn't last either, as the percussion and synths are dropped and the bassline is replaced by a more active and stronger sounding bassline. From here, the track builds, using backing chords and layers of smooth synth. A suggestion of melody is made by a ghostly reverbed synth before the beat gives way to the ambient synthy breakdown. Here, the melody is developed and introduced properly. It is a long and more complicated one, which is nice - it envelopes you, makes you listen and carries you along with the ever changing reverbed and filtered synth. The thing about this melody, what makes it so nice, is its addictiveness - it didn't catch me straight away, instead it grew more and more on me and now I think its pretty damn good. It has an eerie quality to it, weaving its way through the rest of the track - very pleasant indeed! There is a short break after the main section where the melody works its way out of the track, just as it worked its way in before - letting you down gently. From here, the track plays out to its close.
B) Super8 Remix Super8 makes another remix appearance on Anjunabeats with this remix of 'Guanxi'. The beat is more rounded in this one and the bassline is a more traditional yet still rather energetic constant ripple of sound. Lots of bits are added in here - synths and all sorts of sfx stabs. The synths in the background gain strength and act as a solid foundation even though they are also beckoning in more melodic sections. The ensuing breakdown sees a lot of ambience, which acts as a cushion for the impending melody. This time it is played by a much trancier synth. Along with the synth backing, the melody exudes a spacey and distant feel. Instead of focussing on the melody, the entire range of sounds draws your attention and you have something with a lot more 'fullness to it'. After the main section, the track plays out like the Original Mix - a warm down for the melody followed by a gradual and easy journey to the end of the track.
Conclusion:
'Guanxi' is a beautiful sounding track - truly melodic. Its infectiously addictive melody has moved me to score an 8 for this one. Menno De Jong has done a splendid job here - I can't wait to hear what more he has to offer!
