Locked Tight
With a funky intro leading into a breakbeat, it’s going to be a mad start to the album. Sticking out more than most things is the cool percussive ranges used, it’s all well & good having a nice kick but the higher end of a track drives it on, and this definitely hits the mark. Getting Trancier later on in, some lovely chords greet us, leading into a mad breakdown, something synonymous with this duo’s work. Managing to be hard and uplifting at the same time, this is a solid opener.
Looking For Drugs
Do You know where your teenager is at 5 o’clock in the morning? These guys obviously do, and they know all the sordid details about what they’re doing! A Harder edged track here, with one of the best sounding breakdowns I’ve heard in a long time, pounding beats and a cool voiceover, this has it all. The Acid leading to the breakdown is absolutely amazing too, might sound like I’m beating a broken record, but this is totally awesome!
Blackout
A computer assisted voiceover reminds us of what Blackout actually is, and the hi-hats soon join us to help us along. A slowish melody is the highlight here, along with a great acidic build-up. After the breakdown is the strongest part in my opinion, uplifting again but still never leaving the harder edged routes. If I was playing this in a club though, I’d be tempted to shift the pitch up a good 5% however, would take it to another level I think.
In Power
An unusual start to the track, with some funky fx used on a synth that comes in & out, but is soon joined by the kick & bassline. This one however takes time to get going fully, and doesn’t do so until the full melody comes in, filtered slightly but complimented by a huge low bassline, and from this point I think it gets going a lot more.
Rhythm’s Divine (Trance Intoxication)
Beginning with a hard breakbeat, and funky snare usage, we’re pounding senses, and just as the vocal promised us, the kick & bass do just that, very heavy sounding. Informing us that this will be a rhythmic trip, we’re about to find out if it’s true, and sure enough, not long later we’re there. Subtle changes of the notes come maybe unexpected, but work to the point where there is no obvious drop between them, so working very well, and progressing into a pretty great track!
Locked Trance
Starting off with snare rolls, we’re built up into a hardish track, which adds a pinch of melody to it after a cool buildup, rolling notes moving us along, almost sounding arpegiated at times, then others sounding more seperated. A lovely string greets us further in, and adding the melody back in later and the cool buildups, we’ve just been treated to the Organ Donors at their finest.
Wave Guide System
Much heavier here, almost acidic at times, but hard all of it, we have just over 6 minutes of trickery in the form of clever bpm changes and cool FX. The breakbeat section here is possibly one of the best I’ve ever heard in hard dance however, really intelligent and cool sounding. A vocoded voice of ‘wave guide system’ is heard a few times, but the trick here is the intelligent speed changes, adding to the total ambience of the track, and allowing the Acid to be more apparent at some times than others.
What’s Up?
Take the 3 non Blondes acapella, mash it up a bit with the knowledge that only the finest producers posess, and add hard edged sounds to it, sit back and leave to cook at a moderate temperature before opening the oven and allowing it to totally go insane. It might sound weird, but it doesn’t even come close to describing the madness involved here. My personal favourite track, but don’t play it to parents who don’t understand that this isn’t totally pissing on one of their favourite tunes!
99.9
Before this album arrived, if I was asked for one track by the Organ Donors, I would more than likely have said this would be the first one that would come to mind. Hypnotic spoken vocals, remind you of the title all the way through, but add this to a monster of a tune, and you can see why for myself and many other people this is popular. Whilst being fairly heavy sounding at times, it allows us a softer moment too, which really sounds good, and is a testament to how well this duo can switch between rock hard sounds & delicate melodies.
Rhythm’s Divine (Pound Your Senses)
The 2nd instalment of this tune, beginning much more percussive than some of the other tracks, allows us time to breathe before the pounding beats return. A Harder version overall than the earlier one however, this still retains good structure, and that lets everything else work out well.
Mental Atmosphere
An unusual introduction leads us to a pretty dark & deep sounding track, using lots of atmospheric effects, and a beautiful string later on, really makes you want to try & touch the stars, and I love the melody after this, hard to really describe it all, but with a fully complimentary bassline, it’s really great.
4 Tribes (Wanna be startin’ somethin’ – Manticore Introduction)
Sounding almost african or tribal, a spoken chant is used, and adding to this a whistle reminiscent of a tribal instrument, and a slow beat, we’re treated to something very experimental and good sounding here. Nice!
4 Tribes (Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’)
The madness now begins, with a very techy edged version of the previous track, using the same chant as in the latter stages of the first version, we’re full on now, and everything points to a hell raising experience here. This being the closest track to techno on the compilation really makes me pleased to be able to add another style down to the range involved on this album. Another track I’d play in a set, and with a cool breakdown, going very slow & building up perfectly, it’s another track of the album competitor.
Turntablizm
Give 2 DJ’s the chance to be creative and show off other talents such as scratching, and this is what you’d get, one word describes it better than a whole paragraph could, Amazing.
Conclusion:
Covering many styles, and with the amazing turntablizm skills on the last track, this has to be in your collection if you like any of these styles. Top Stuff, and I'm pleasantly surprised as to how much I really do like it. Too many top tracks to mention!!
