The latest track from Armin's monster label, A State Of Trance, is here. Can True Form's 'Forbidden Colours' stand out from the rest of the ASOT bunch...?
True Form is a new project made up of the highly talented trance new-comers Robert Nickson and Perry O'Neil. Both have already appeared on the ASOT label - Robert Nickson as himself with 'Spiral' and Perry O'Neil with St. John in the St. John Vs. Locust projects 'Mind Circles'. Thomas Datt steps in with a remix and having just had his quality track '2v2' released on Discover and not so long ago remixing Marco V's 'I Feel You', hes definitely getting some good attention lately.
:: True Form - Forbidden Colours :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT021
A) Original Mix We start with a punchy beat, percussion and some coarse, filtered and rather acidy lines regularly lacing the background. The bass soon follows and is a pretty standard affair as far as basslines go. A staccato synth backing soon makes itself heard, playing the first hints of a melody - some long and sustained notes are also blended in to make way for the breakdown. The synth backing is developed into the full melody and gains strength, as does the rest of the instruments. When the track drops back in, the jittery, arpeggiated synth backing melody is transformed into something with a much more thick and trancey sound. That said, it still retains a light feeling as it just dusts over the rest of the track as opposed to blending with it. The synth drops off for a short rest period and is brought back in and built back up in another short breakdown for one last main section.
B) Thomas Datt Remix Thomas Datt's Remix is founded by a soft-edged beat and interesting hollow sounding percussion. A bassline creeps its way in as the initial instruments are filtered out and a short break occurs, featuring bass and simple percussion. The kicks joins us again, along with some regular soft and reverbed synth chords. The bass builds slowly as some female 'Aahs' blend in and out of the track. After all this feel-good niceness, the track breaks down to near silence, with just some quiet synths pattering away in the background. This breakdown is soft and gentle - it slowly builds synth, 'Aahs' and bass in a terrific way, bringing in a new melody along the way until the time is right for the beat to drop back in. The melody is more emotional and feel-good stuff which should bring a euphoric smile to your face. As with the Original Mix, there is a rest period followed by another mini breakdown and build up before a final main section with that lovely nice melody plays out one last time before the end of the track.
Conclusion:
Overall, 'Forbidden Colours' is a very nice track. The Original Mix feels a little on the empty side though, and is greatly overshadowed by the marvellous sounding remix by Thomas Datt - a wicked blend of sound and instruments and an emotional and touching melody. A very fine track indeed.
