This special limited release on A State Of Trance Limited holds some rather alternative remixes of Envios latest track 'Time To Say Goodbye'. Read on to find out how the remixes by Bobina, Ozgur Can and Arksun fare...
Envio has had a few previous releases on the A State Of Trance label - 'Touched By The Sun' plus additional remixes and 'Time To Say Goodbye', the latter of which also has some special new remixes on a limited A State Of Trance release. The vinyl holds a remix by Bobina, a remix by Ozgur Can and an ambient filmscape mix by Arksun. It also comes in a rather sexy looking silver and white sleeve.
:: Envio - Time To Say Goodbye :: A State Of Trance Limited :: ASOTL001
A1) Bobina Remix The Bobina Remix has a very housey feel right from the start. The steady kick is cushioned by a lot of percussive hits and backing plus a constant, soft and ambient sounding synth playing a sustained note in the background. A bassline is introduced which really boosts the house feeling. It acts as a strong foundation while adding variation with a small repeating scale twice in each bar. As the track progresses, so does the ambient synth in the background, which begins its own chord progression after a small break featuring Envio's trademark guitar plating the main 'Time To Say Goodbye' melody. The middle of the track sees a long ambient breakdown which features lots of chilled background effects and a really nice mix of ambient synth chords and female 'Aahs' backing up the mellowed out melody played by the electric guitar. The track gears back up by re-introducing the bassline and then a new element - a prominent synth with a rough edge. This plays its own mini melody along with the bass. It is a nice and somehow logical progression for the remainder of the track and this new instrument along with the bassline create quite a groove together.
B1) Ozgur Can Remix Here, we go from the different to the completely different! We start with a quiet but active percussive section which is complemented by even quieter female 'Aahs' in the background. Soon though, a full on breakbeat is introduced with a really meaty bass drum. The track continues to progress and grow with more backing synths and hints of the main melody creeping in up to the point where a lusciously deep and simmering bass instrument is introduced. The familiar electric guitar creeps in slowly up to the main breakdown where it features alongside three different elements of the tune one after the other. First it plays along with the ambient synths and 'Aahs'. Second it plays along with the gurglingly deep bassline. Third, the breakbeaty percussion has its turn. This is an interesting section which allows you to taste each of the different flavours in the track one after the other. The final main section features all of the above elements playing harmoniously together - very relaxing and pleasant to listen to.
B2) Arksun's Filmscape Mix This one is more different than completely different! Its a totally different take on 'Time To Say Goodbye'. Arksun's mix is a pool of ambience based on continuous ambient bass (including that awesome chillout style booming deep bass), ambient synths and sparse reverbed percussive taps and hits. The guitar melody is played embedded in a pool of ambient backing. Focus gradually moves away from the guitar onto a stronger progressively melodic synth until you're returned to a calm backing of sea, wind and animal noise and the end of the track.
Conclusion:
Overall, an interesting piece of vinyl. The Bobina Remix is a catchy, housey track while Ozgur Can's remix focusses on the beatier side of things with a good bit of breakbeat action. Arksun's Filmscape Mix is yet another perspective, totally transforming the original tune into an ambient pool of chilled out sound. An interesting side release from A State Of Trance which is worth a listen to, if nothing else.
