The ongoing debate of mp3 mixing as opposed to vinyls or CDs is heightened, with the introduction of new software which takes mixing a step further into the digital age. Will this mark another step for digital mixing?
New revolutionary software for DJ’s.
An Amsterdam based company has recently developed a new way of mixing, called Finalscratch, you may have heard something about this already, if not, then read on.
The ‘old’ way that DJ’s go to work is: they bring a recordcase stuffed with records, and they use 2 turntables and a mixer. What Finalscratch do is: they replace the records, by having a digital copy of it on the computer (a laptop that you can bring everywhere). You also need the special Finalscratch vinyls, with which you can cue, pitch, seek the bass, just like with normal records.
Most people who read this, will think it’s easy, you just press a button and the program mixes the 2 songs into each other. This isn’t true, all Finalscratch does is, replace the records, so you don’t have to carry heavy DJ cases, or worry bout them getting lost. You still need the technique to mix, so not anyone can use this software to mix seamlessly. You need to be an actual DJ to use this.
Most people will share my opinion, that this isn’t the real way a DJ works. A DJ needs the touch of his records, he needs to mix the records into each other, and not 2 mp3’s. But the software and the equipment evolves, so this could be the future, although a lot of people will be against this.
There are already some famous DJ’s who are using this, DJ’s like Richie Hawtin (a.k.a. Plastikman) and John Acquaviva.
The complete package consists of • 1 Sony Vaio Pentium 3 700 mhz (or a laptop with the same features) • Finalscratch software • Scratchamp Signal Processor • 3 Finalscratch records • 2 Finalscratch slipmats • Audio and USB-cables • Installation & user-manual • 1 carrying case. The price of this all is $2,999. So it’s not because of the cheap price you have to do it.
If you are interested in this, visit www.finalscratch.com for more information, for links, or to order it from the site.
What are your opinions about this?
