A lady who had her own cable access show, made her own movie, who is also behind an art movement and also running for president releases this vinyl. Does she translate all that into the music?
Madeline Minx – Unleash Your Soul
It is rare that we have unique artists anymore, so many artists today are too busy trying to be like someone else and most try to sound like everyone else. This is not the case with Madeline Minx, who is quite a character herself. Madeline Minx is the founder of the pushy movement, which is one of the most unique things that I have come across in recent memory. Madeline Minx was born Noemi Zeigler and she came up with the pushy idea, one day in 1995 and it was a way to screw with limitations, so Pushy was born. She had her own cable access show, but her real break was in 2000, when she went to Maverick’s Offices to get Madonna to listen to her CD. She stood outside with a press kit and finally some guy from the mailroom came and took the CD. She then ran into Courtney Love in the bathroom at the Sundance Film Festival and started rolling the camera. She crashed a Woody Allen Press Conference once and gave him her CD, the pushy lady has been everywhere. She is even running for President http://www.getpushy.com/president.html. This lady has even put out her own movie, so she is usually pushing the envelope everywhere in life. This is poptronica (a phrase that she coined as well), which fuses pop with electronica, if you are wondering, is this lady crazy? You are not alone. This is her release called “Unleash your soul”, which adds remixes from Boris and Beck, Goldchains, and DJ Se:ek.
Unleash Your Soul
1.Radio Edit 2.Boris and Beck Mix 3.Goldchains Mix 4.DJ Se:ek 5.Boris and Beck Dub 6.Kisses Like Candy
1.Radio Edit
I assume this is the original song here and this is destined for radio play. We start with a piano and then the vocal comes in with the line that is used for the remixes “Nobody is looking, you are a jasmine perfume tea, you are a techno dancing queen, you dance like no one has ever seen” then to the chorus “Unleash your soul”. This is more of a bland pop song and the voice does not achieve the sultry ballad that I’m sure it was destined to be. The song continues in this mold till the finish and you are happy that it is done.
2.Boris and Beck Mix
We start with remix number one here, this is Boris and Beck’s first mix of the song. We start with claps and you hear in the background, some of the vocals but they are near the back. All of the sudden, some banging beats come in and this reminds me of a Hex Hector remix from a few years ago. I think this is aiming for the more commercial dance lovers as a market here. This mix uses the vocal but changes it slightly, you hear “Butterfly, you are a jasmine perfume tea, you dance like no one has ever seen”. This song has so much promise in the very beginning but it tends to go off course.
3.Goldchains Mix
I’ve never heard of Goldchains till now, this goes for a more housy approach, still sounds way too commercial for my liking. This just sounds below average with some weak guitar effects and some cheesy sequencer effects and uses the vocal in a way that leaves you scratching your head. This is one mix that is better left alone.
4.DJ Se:ek Mix
This is another name that I have not heard of and this mix is not bad. It starts with some keyboard effects and you hear “Butterfly”, that is repeated over and over for sometime. About a minute into it, the song finally gets going with a more commercial dance sound, I’m sure that deejays will hammer this. It has a subtle grinding sound that is near the back but it really adds to the enjoyment. The chorus is then brought in and it begins to get on your nerves at times. About three minutes, the vocal is used with a more ballad like aim but this remix is better than the others, it then chugs on till the end. I don’t see how this would play out in a club, it is just too laidback but to each his or her own.
5.Boris and Beck Dub
This starts exactly like the first mix but since this is a dub, it uses very little of the vocals. I like this remix the most and it has the best qualities. This is a dancefloor song and it is more a mover because the riffs drive this and the vocal is not around to take the song down. I’m not a big commercial dance music fan but I love this remix because it is harsher and more banging.
6.Kisses like Candy
This is a ballad, no electronic dance music here. It is a piano driven song, I’m not a big pop fan either but somehow I like this because of the first line “I’ll crush you inside my little thigh”. It basically talks about how your kisses are like candy. I’m not sure why this was added to the package but I guess to each his or her own.
Conclusion:
This will make commercial dance fans very happy but the only mix that is great is the Boris and Beck dub, the rest are either below average or average. I do think that this is not the last that we will see or hear of Madeline Minx. I think she is a great vocalist because she has the guts to use lyrics that others would just pass on but this is not the greatest song to start with and the remixes left a lot to be desired.
