Rennie Pilgrem unleashes his next single from his forthcoming album "Pilgremage", he drafts in Sara Whittaker-Gilbey as the vocalist. Does this meet the usual TCR standard?
Rennie Pilgrem feat. Sarah Whittaker-Gilbey – Coming Up For Air
Rennie Pilgrem seems to be a very busy man these days, he is always releasing something or touring the world, the man stands still. This is the second single from his forthcoming album called “Pilgremage”. This features the vocals of Sara Whittaker-Gilbey from Mara and Choo Choo Records. It was first tested on New Year’s Day at Field Day in Sydney, in front of 22,000 people and apparently the reaction was massive. This will be released as Renn3088 and Renn3088R on July 26th.2004.
Rennie Pilgrem feat. Sarah Whittaker-Gilbey – Coming Up For Air (Renn3088/3088R)
1.Original Field Day Mix 2.Rennie’s Industrial Disco Mix 3.Mara Mix 4.J.D.S Mix 5.Koma and Bones Mix
1.Original Field Day Mix
This was the original mix that was crowd tested at Field Day in Sydney. We start with fun loving breakbeat house, almost gets you dancing right from the start. We hear the great vocal, which was very smart of Rennie Pilgrem to draft in, Sara Whittaker-Gilbey. She sings the chorus “I’m drowning in this world, am I still your girl? I can’t breathe down there, I’m coming up for air”. The vocal is well balanced and it does not try to take over the song, it simply adds to it. This must have really gone down well with the 22,000 strong crowd in Sydney and they were lucky enough to be the first to hear the song.
2.Rennie’s Industrial Disco Mix
What would a TCR release be without a Rennie Pilgrem mix? It would probably feel empty because I’m always looking forward to Rennie’s mixes. This is an industrial disco mix, not quite as disco as “Dirty Raver” was but still discofied. The first vocal part you hear is “Airrrrrrrrrr” and you have claps come in, it uses the main melody as the Original Field Day Mix but throws in an discofied breaks version. The same chorus is repeated and this is just a joy to listen to.
3.Mara Mix
So Sara Whittaker-Gilbey is singing here and they have a Mara Mix (Sara and her husband Barry are Mara, if you did not know), it just seems that this release would be incomplete without it. The Mara Mix uses one of the more filthy basslines in recent memory, yet again this reminds me of dirty tribal house for some reason. The mix is more dirty house with a breakbeat element. The chorus comes in, surrounded by the nasty filthy bassline and it works well. This will probably be played by more progressive breaks leaning deejays. It makes great use of sound effects here, some sound effects sound like futuristic movie noises and they come in and out. Top marks to Mara here for giving us, a more filthy mix.
4.J.D.S Mix
Next to be drafted in to do a mix of the song is the wonder duo known as J.D.S, they did one of the bigger tunes from last year called "Blackout" and this release is on the heels of their monster “Purple Funky Monkey” tune. This mix is really more of a dub mix here because so little of the vocal is actually used. This is more jump up style breaks, here you just hear the vocalist’s notes, no words, everything is altered. J.D.S adds some weird sound effects into a monster breakdown. We have another fine mix in this package.
5.Koma and Bones Mix
The final mix in this package is the trio known as Koma and Bones. It uses some effects that sound like running water at times, backed by the usual jumping Koma and Bones bassline. This is a little more than a dub mix but it does not use the entire vocal like Rennie’s Mix or Mara’s Mix. The vocal part of “I”, is repeated over and over than “Stand Up” is repeated, over and over and whatever you hear of the voice is completely altered. They have added sound effects, that sound similar to warning sirens but changed, and thrown in for good measure. This really completes the package
Conclusion:
It seems like a cliché all the time, that when a TCR release comes out that you hear people saying great things about their releases. TCR really watch what they put out and I imagine their quality controls are very strict because every release of late has been pure quality. Rennie Pilgrem does it again with drafting in the right vocalist in Sara Whittaker-Gilbey and then backing in with the right bassline and using the right vocal. The remix package offers a little something for everyone, more vocal mixes in the Rennie Pilgrem mix and the Mara Mix and more dub oriented in the J.D.S mix and the Koma and Bones mix. I’d head for the Original Mix and the very filthy Mara Mix but all of the mixes have something for everyone. It meets the usual TCR standard and then some. Look for the forthcoming Rennie Pilgrem album called “Pilgremage”, which should be out soon.
