Saturday the 26th of June was the day a lot of people had been looking out for for ages: a 2004 edition of the popular Impulz Festival, held in one of the most intriguing locations one could ever imagine. After going through a quick search at the entrance, me and my mates entered the festival terrain. We were handed a leaflet with the timetable and a map on it, and went to the lockers (yes, handy!) to store our precious stuff for the night to come. The first thing I noticed was the beauty of the location: a recreational area, normally used for walking around on lazy Sundays, now transformed into a huge dance walhalla, completed with a fairground attraction to stir up some stomachs. We went to get some coins for drinks, after which our first inspection of the area commenced. The space near the entrance was filled with food stands and a lot of picnic tables to eat your food at. Two Dance Valley Volkswagens coloured the area with their '60's looks, and some speakers were set up to keep the vibe alive during the short food-breaks people were taking. A large tent, Area 6, was located directly across the entrance, being surrounded by some darkish, skull-like posters, fitting perfectly with the style of music that was spun here: hardcore. Inside the tent were alot of TV-monitors, displaying the 'Multigroove' logo, accompanied by a nice array of lighting and a tough soundsystem. I haven't been here real long (hardcore isn't really my style), but it seemed like the rest of the people enjoyed themselves alot during the hard as nails sets. The Hardstyle area was the second area we encountered: a rather big stage for the DJ, located in between trees, creating a very special effect when standing on the 'dancefloor'. First thing I noticed was that the sound wasn't very loud at the beginning of the evening, but everything got cleared up when I heard that some officials were doing inspections. The Hardstyle area wasn't very populated when we were there first, rather logical because most of the crowd was watching Sweden - Netherlands on a huge screen which was set up by Vodafone, a mobile phone company that is present at almost every UDC party. The match had just started, so we walked around a bit, got ourselves a beer and watched a bit of soccer. There were no goals 'till the 15-minute break, so we went on to check out the remaining area's.
We went to the Main Stage first: a gigantic stage with dozens and dozens of lights and a huge soundsystem, being surrounded by a small tent for the LJ's and a Heineken stand for the thirsty people. Ronald van Gelderen was spinning his set, playing tunes like White Room - 'White Room', Underworld - 'Born Slippy' (Oakenfold Remix), Empirical Labs - 'Turtle Beach' (Outback Remix) and his own track 'Crying Out'. It's a shame everyone was watching the EC match, cause Ronald's set was very powerful. After enjoying ourselves a bit more at the main stage, we walked back to see the rest of the match. Luckily (sorry Swedes), the Dutch team won, ensuring the atmosphere to become even better. Everyone was yelling, screaming, going nuts, and all the euphoria was being amplified even more by turning on this HUGE laser at a small island across the lake that was situated near the viewscreen / mainstage. Green bursts of light injected themselves in the air, covering a gigantic portion of the area. Meanwhile, Renato Cohen was finishing his set in the Techno tent. The decoration was done in a very nice way: a big 'C' (made using truss) was spinning around above the crowds heads, and the ceiling was covered with small stars. The speakers were located at four positions: two at the front and two at the back of the dancefloor. Mr. Cohen was spinning a good set, the crowd seemed to be enjoying it alot. After all this, Christian Wunsch took control with his laptop for a Live performance. We stayed there for 15 more minutes, and went back to the Main Stage to see Ferry Corsten.
John '00' Fleming was just finishing his set, with alot of good tunes that I had never heard before. By now, all the sunlight disappeared and made place for utter darkness, causing the light jockeys to turn on even more lights, including a big chain of lasers. All this created a supercool effect, producing an even better vibe throughout the crowd on the 'dancefloor'. As Ferry took over control of the wheels of steel, the crowd started to cheer. The first part of his set mainly consisted of a bunch of techno-ish tunes, but soon he transformed to the still we all love him for: trance. Tunes like his remix for F. Massif - 'Somebody' and his own 'Right Of Way' ensured the crowd to go mental any time. More and more uplifting trance blasted through the speakers as we left for a short pause at the Beach area. I expected to find alot of people chilling around a bit, listening to some clubby, relaxing music, but instead I noticed alot of people raving around on some very cool, summerish tunes. The location itself was very 'intimate': not too big, but very pleasant to look at. We went on to the HQ area, which was situated in a big tent. A big logo and a load of TV-camera's were the things that caught my attention first. Also, the timetable had been altered a bit because some of the DJ's didn't get there in time, or something like that. One thing that annoyed me a bit was the overall sound volume: it was OK at the middle and the front, but all the other parts of the tent seemed to lack a bit of energy. This had to do with inspections as well I think, so we can't really blame the organisation here.
Flutlicht and S.H.O.K.K. were starting their set at approximately 01:45, so we went back to the mainstage to find out if they are still as strong as they were last year, DJ-wise. And they were! Starting off with a few progressive tunes, the music soon turned into highly energetic (hard)trance, just the thing we are used to from the guys. Tracks like Flutlicht's remix for G&M Project - 'Control Of Your Mind', Woodshokk - 'Tulips & Chocolate' (G&M Project Remix), Alex Bartlett - 'Amnesia' (Flutlicht vs. S.H.O.K.K. remix), Mat Silver vs. Tony Burts remix for Adagio For Strings, Marcel Woods - 'Static State' (Tech Trance Mix) blasted their way out of the speakers, combined with some good mixing and a few awesome tunes I hadn't heard before. The lights did their work very well, and I was dissappointed to hear that Sound Of Overdose - 'City To City' (S.H.O.K.K. remix) was the last tune they played, cause I was really enjoying this set! Johan Gielen went on stage after this, but our feet gave up on us, so we walked towards the beach to sit down for a while and recharge.
During that period, it started to rain. And not just tiny drops! It had rained before during the football match, but this was something else; everyone ran inside the tent area's, causing some aggression among the crowd who were inside already. We didn't want to be part of this, so went on to get some food. We found out that we had to buy seperate coins for this: kinda stupid, because this could have easily been done using the coins for drinks in my opinion. Oh well, you can't have everything. Our sit on the beach didn't really help us recover from all the dancing at the mainstage, so we went on for a small walk to find out what was going on in the other tents. The Hardstyle stage was very, very crowded: it took us ages to get through all the people, but eventually we got out and headed our way towards the HQ tent again. Scot Project was banging out his tunes, and the crowd seemed to like it! He played some of his new productions as well, but the space to dance was rather limited because everyone wanted to get into the tent to avoid the rain. As the clock neared 04:30, the sun started to come up. We didn't get to see much of it because of all the clouds, but it surely was nice to see it becoming day again. Entering and leaving an event, both with daylight is a really nice experience I must admit. We were really tired, so didn't do much 'till 06:30. We went to see Surgeon at the Techno tent for a while. He played a nice set, but we were just too tired to go on. We decided to go to the lockers again, got our stuff and went out...
As a conclusion I can say this was a very succesful edition of Impulz again! The lights at the mainstage were awesome, the music was superb and the overall atmosphere was very nice. The only things that annoyed me were the rain and my feet, so I'd better take myself a rain cap and start training my feets for the next edition.
