Oliver Prime makes his debut appearance on Reset Records with a track in his magical style of dark, goa influenced trance...
Oliver Prime has had a few releases in the past - 'De Korah' last year and 'Velvet Sunshine' back in February. Now, the 23 year old producer has come up with 'Radiance' - a dark trancer with elements of the goa side of psy-trance. On the flipside of this record are two mixes by the Scratch Bandicoot aka Paul Moelands of Octagen and Re-Locate fame. 'Radiance' will be released soon in July...
:: Oliver Prime - Radiance :: Reset Records Promo :: RS006
A1) Original Mix The Original Mix begins with a quiet, ambient section in order to set the mood for the rest of the track. A muted beat and basic percussion are used to make way for the main kick, which has a rounded and soft sound. The track really reaches its main body after a short filtered break where a deep, rolling bassline is introduced - the kind of bassline common amongst most psy-trance tracks. From here, the track is a continuous building progression. Things are continually introduced. Oliver melds a melody out of the bassline and ambient ghostly sounding synths which sweep over the track in waves. More synths add to the droning ambience and another coarser synth rides on top of everything, adding some more to the overall flavour of the track. The long breakdown sees the kick, percussion and bass drop off, leaving just the ambience left to weave its way around each other. Some very eerie sounds are created here, in the backing and in the melody. The main kick and bass are swept back in where there is one final section of eerie spookiness before the track is de-layered to a close. Dark, moody, magnificent.
B1) Scratch Bandicoot Remix The first Scratch Bandicoot mix begins with a percussive section backed up by a springy sounding synth stabbing out a rhythmic melody. The kick which comes in next is stronger and more agile than the one found in the Original Mix. This mix develops eerie elements of its own with the introduction of a squeaky synth fluttering out a repeating melody in and out of the foreground. During the breakdown, a new melody not heard in the Original Mix comes in. It has a kind of Egyptian sound to it and still retains a very ambient and ghostly feel. Yet more progression means a stronger version of the springy synth heard at the beginning is brought into play. The final section of the track sees all the different parts merged together as one. This works very well - there is a lot to listen to in the sea of eerie and ghostly sounds and it all fits perfectly.
B2) Scratch Bandicoot Deep Mix This Deep Mix, brought to you by the Scratch Bandicoot begins with a rather housey feel. It has a solid kick and some housey chords in the background. The bobbing bassline adds to this also. As the track progresses, lots of small sfx and synths are added in, playing all sorts of spooky little sounds thus bringing out the trance of this mix. After an ambient break, soft synths play out the original 'Radiance' melody. From here, it is a chilled and gentle journey to the end of the track. A nice track - housey styled, chilled trance feel with a goa trance influence.
Conclusion:
I like 'Radiance'. It has a very strong and dark style and feel to it. The goa psy-trance influence is apparent, which is great because I love that sound which is re-emerging from the underground scene currently. The Scratch Bandicoot Remix is more upbeat with new melodies but it retains the core dark and mellow feel of the Original, while the Deep Mix is a more chilled take of the Original great for more chilled sessions.Overall, 'Radiance' is splendid - a wonderful blend of dark, eerie, moody and ambient sounds.
