Matt Darey brings us another update about whats going on along with his short reviews of the favourite tracks of July.
Trance in the UK This months nights that are not to be missed are Trance Generation @ Sound Shaft in London which I experienced first hand in June playing with Above and Beyond and Dogzilla. There was a great atmosphere with one room rammed full of up for it Transters and what was really cool was seeing the who's who of trance producers all getting down to it and off there nut! This months Trance generation brings you Agnelli and Nelson who are such a laugh to watch with Chris the mad one jumping around on the decks along with Thrillseekers who brought us loads of classic anthems from back in 99 to the present day's Nu Life which has been rocking the trancefloors of late. Also headlining on the night is Gatecrashers own Scott Bond who has recently started his own label "Made in England" and collaborated with the very talented Solar Stone on a few occasions bringing us tracks like "Naked angel". Its definitely one not to miss Friday 13th August from 10pm till 7am. (www.trancegeneration.co.uk)
If your after the big room night out the one to watch out for is definitely Knowhere at the Fridge on Friday Aug 20th with myself behind the decks playing the best in upfront trance, a few classics and maybe a surprise PA of my new single. The first two Knowwhere monthly's have been absolutely amazing with some great guest DJ line ups to date and this months offering is gonna keep the good times rollin'. Also on the night you can catch budding trance DJ's Dom Pardey & Ricky Divine, K90 playing live and hard as nails, Kiss FM's & Peach favourite Graham Gold and Knowhere resident Anthony Dean. (www.clubknowwhere.co.uk)
If your lucky to be out in ibiza for the Radio One weekend on Friday Aug 6th you can catch me down at Eden with Dave Pearce and if im still standing by 3 am I'll finish off the night with some big tunes to make your weekend one to remember. Also that weekend you make sure you check out one of the Radio One gigs cause its usually a bit of a mad one. More details at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/ibiza2004
Trance revolution Trance revolution, the new Jurgen Vries Album is already on the streets which is half mix album and half artist album. Lashings of commercial smash hit Jurgen Vries productions such as The Opera song featuring welsh opera babe Charlotte Church, a cover of the Dido track Take my hand featuring the stunning vocals of Andrea Britton and the first ever JV anthem entitled The Theme. These Tate productions are quite cleverly mixed with some real cool trance tunes like the pumping Green Martian - Ladies and Gents, Solid Globe - Sahara, Koglin & Grant - Circuits, Thrill Seekers - Nu Life, Flash back - Groove Slide and the guitar laced anthem from the Flash Brothers Amen, all tunes which I personally rate as some of the cream of this years trance offerings. If you fancy something quite accessible but with some true trance anthems of 2004 go I'd check this one out.
Essential tunes this month You can listen to all these tunes and more on demand in the mix at www.mattdarey.com
This month its all gone a bit mad with the number of monster trance tunes arriving on my doorstep. Suddenly it seems like everyone has decided to release the tunes they've had hidden under there hats in the race for the summer anthem. Im very sure there wont be another month like ity and there's so many wicked tunes around right now we've had to extend the reviews section after all, its all about the tunes innit!
ADAM WHITE & ANDY MOOR pres WHITEROOM - THE WHITE ROOM (Liquid Asset Recordings) Andy Moore is one half of the duo leama & Moore who have blown up on the progressive scene over the last year with remixes of Li Kwan Point Zero and more recently a remix of Brian Eno's "An Ending" coupled together with the hugely talented Adam White of Reverence and Euphoria Fame they have both created a really cool piece of trance which has won massive support from all the big name Dj's such as Tiesto and Armin. The production is amazing and the riff catchy but understated giving it an air of coolness to break into the box of even the proggy end of the DJ spectrum.
Music Man - Eden (Alpha magic) Jell Faber remix Yet another bangin trance anthem from the boys at Alpha Magic that would be a crime not to mention in these pages. Chimes are the order of the day but that's about as nice as it gets as the whole track kicks into dark minimal tek trance followed by a gritty phazed up industrial synth with the same melody. All in all one to keep the real gurners on the floor as they march off into hard trance oblivion.
JLND - Son (Kompressed) Arc in the Sky remix JLND better known as Airwave is one of many new releases on KISS FM Dj John Askews label. Typically pumping and harder edged techy trance from Kompressed with another serious mix from Arc in the Sky who are signed to Askews other label Discover. The track drives along with minimal riffs and arpeggios underpinned by some hard beats and driving basslines. Another quality club tune from Kompressed.
Flash Brothers - Amen (Direction) Lys & Gigi Remix I first heard these guys when they did a guest Dj mix for graham gold last year and got on the email to find out who they were. Turns out there 3 bothers from Israel. There's been a scene there for sometime and until now has spawned mostly tech trance artists but now the flash Bro's deliver there own very distinctive blend of guitars and housed up trance. The original mix is great but Lys & Gigi give it a polished remix that has elements of the trademark Ferry Corsten drum sound. The hooky female vocal is a winner, big with the chicks and will undoubtedly be another crossover for Direction.
Flash Bang - Grooveslide (Dedicated) Vincent De Moore Flashbang is the latest guise from one of Holland's top notch producers Vincent de Moor. This is the one of the guys who like myself was there from the start of the trance scene back in 94 and was most famous for his groundbreaking track "Flotation". Besides being extremely hot it's a outrageously energetic, experimental yet atmospheric track. In short: this is a high energy peak-time trance scorcher at his dirtiest in 2 mixes!Already supported by the likes of Judge Jules, Marco V, Paul van Dyk and myself.
Factoria - A Legends legacy (Elevation) Orig A Legends Legacy is Factoria's second single and has proven to be a hit with Armin, Ferry Corsten, Paul Kershaw, Myself and Graham Gold. The original mix is the one for me but is also backed by an Octagen remix who is also know as re:locate. Factoria has also co-released 'Conductivity' with Oceanforce which proved to be massive with Dave Pearce on his Dance Anthems show last year. With a vocal that sounds like something similar to PVD's nothing but you its a massive euphoric hands in the air moment that will send shivers down the spine and bring tears to the eyes of every trance warrior across the globe as they munch yet another disco biscuit.
Blank & Jones - Stars Shine Bright (Spinnin) Sam Sharp Sam Sharp delivers yet another storming remix and quite similar to E Craigs Beat goes on with filtering synths, dark chords and pumping tecky rythms. This is an exclusive remix of one of the tracks on the latest Blank & Jones 'Monument' Album called 'Stars Shine Bright'. This is one of those "What the F**K" tracks that you hear at 4 am and makes you get up of your mashed up ass to give it some serious welly! Warning, Not for the fluffy brigade.
Shuffle royale - Escade (Alpha Magic) Majestic trance makes a comeback with another monster on the alphamagic label with a blinding mix from Alphazone. As usual the label delivers a harder edged ballistic trance missile with a classicly inspired hook with a dark but uplifting progression. For a moment in the breakdown it sounds like your listening to a gothic choir in a futuristic cathedral before it kicks in with the main lead riff and it kicks into an all guns blazing trance symphony. Will get em going every time.
DJ Energy - Serenity (Nucleuz) Orig Mix This is one of the first trance offerings from a label known for hard house and techno. I've noticed there has been a merging of harder styles with trance at many of the big nights around the UK and its probably this that's been the catalyst. Its a mixture of pumping trance and some elements of a deeper dub trance tune as the track builds progressively towards a lush breakdown with loads of warmth and depth. The female speaks out words of Serenity and the track breaks out into an uplifting but understated trance riff for a hands in the air moment before it kicks in for some full on glow-stick action. Lush but tough and great to see a label like Nucleuz dipping there toes into the translucent waters.
Tiesto - Walking on Clouds Tiesto has delivered a third track from the album which I haven't stopped playing given the opportunity of a more mellow moment...which in my sets is quite rare unless im carrying on from a progressive set. This is a track recorded with Josh Gabriel from Gabriel and Dresdon of whom I'm a massive fan. With a distinct Jame's Holden feel and wispy female vocal the track bangs in with a Lock Down garage bline and some cool percussion, moody stabs and some techy sounds. A deeper piece of trance for the more sophisticated ravers.
